BackroadJunkieBackroadJunkie Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭✭✭

Oops.

From Coin World:

Mint inadvertently sells individual Proof 2019-W Lincoln cents, at face value

A total of 91 lucky United States Mint customers on March 3 and 4 were able to successfully order 921 individual Proof 2019-W Lincoln cents at face value, which were then shipped to them before officials realized that an internal system used for tracking Mint products was made public and became a live catalog order page.

Another 270 orders for 41,509 cents were canceled, according to the Mint

Expect the next mint offering to cost more to offset losses. :D

I believe you were almost there. I tried too but was too late! :(

So the question begs is it worth it to send these pennies in for grading?

Bored. So, here are the estimated price points to slab the cents. Calculations done on the fly and errors are probable.

    Key:
number of cents: per coin fee total + processing fee + insurance + USPS Small Priority box that comes with $50 mailing insurance = total cost (average cost per cent)

    1: 16 + 10 + 22 + 7.35 = 55.35 (55.35)

    5: 80 + 10 + 27 + 7.35 = 119.35 (23.97)

    10: 160 + 10 + 27 + 7.35 = 204.35 (20.44)

    20: 320 + 10 + 27 + 7.35 = 364.35 (18.21)

    50: 800 + 10 + 33.25 + 7.35 = 850.60 (17.01)

    100: 1600 + 10 + 45.85 + 7.35 = 1663.20 (16.63)

    Enjoy

    Food for thought. Thanks @Hemispherical.

The thing about these "shipped in error" cents is they need to be attributed or they are just the bonus cents separated from the shipped proof set.

If you want attribution then you have to get them graded and slabbed.
And a label attesting to the error.
Either PCGS. NGC or ANACS should be contacted ASAP and who ever says OK get the job.
A Mint receipt would be required, I would think, for proof of shipping error origin.

Keep us informed if you are going to get them graded and attributed, by whom and what the special label will say.

So that means there is a face value link for every coin they produce. Keep an eye out for another link leak!!! Imagine getting a state puck for just 25 cents!

Agree. Since the Mint has publicized the numbers we know the total coin population. Those receiving the cents better keep the receipts and/or leave them in the shipping box for the attribution. Wonder which TPGS will be first to offer.

Well I got my Proof box in today with my pennies inside it . It’s still sealed till I find out which grafing service will offer the better set. I am only thinking both pennies 1 S & 1 W mint Mark and the Kennedy half dollar to get graded. Send back the rest. That is if I am understanding what all comes with the set.

I am glad they shipped these out to those lucky people. Good for them.

If the goobermint was consistent, they would be demanding their return - similar to the 1933 double eagles.

Shaking my head at the latest example of the mint's ineptitude. Someone needs to get fired.

    702280 2019-W PRDC

Shows one has been graded a 69

    Thanks @jabba!

I was going to say, “How in the world did someone get it graded so fast,” but remembered that the Mint and our host was at Baltimore recently.

Cameonut hit the nail right on the head in regards to the 33 $20's. You could also say the same thing about the Aluminum cents. Wonder if these new cents have been motised (sp)?

I believe that the word you are looking for is "monetized."

Doesn't matter, since that malarkey was a bit if legal booshwah dreamed up for one of the 1933 Double Eagle trials.

These aren't even close to the 33 $20s.

These are released in a proof set. Just because they were mistakenly released on their own, the overall coin is NOT being recalled....and, they were already released, as part of the set, by the USMint, at a coin show. Charmy, and others, purchased some and had already had them in hand when this happened on the website.

Kudos to those who got them, I didn't even think to look until I saw a thread here and it was too late, but it does no one any good to whine about them and try to compare it to something else that they have a problem with.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Why would a slab label indicate a mint pricing error?? What possible premium could that justify? Other than a cost savings by a lucky few, the cents are the same. Cheers, RickO
