Removing an Ugly Glob of PVC
Picked up a Peace Dollar on eBay. It arrived today with a glob of green PVC residue on the eye. I don't have any straight acetone. Since this is a small spot treatment, would nail polish remover on a qtip be OK or is that a bad idea? TIA for any/all advice.

That should work. Rinse well with alcohol and then water and pat dry with no rubbing.

Many have additives that will leave a messy residue when dried. Check the label/ingredient list.
That is what I am worried about, but if I follow up with isopropyl alcohol and a warm water rinse, would that clean off the residue? Again, spot treatment, not a full coin dip/bath. Thanks.
Spot treated with mineral oil will lift it.
It would be worth it to get the straight up stuff at any CVS, etc.....

Bring it to me
I will take care of it for you
It’s that simple!
There are polish removers without additives. Read the ingredients on the bottle.
Or you can get ACS grade (pure) from laboratory supply stores. Amazon has lab supply stores but they are expensive.
Just run up to home depot or menards or Lowes to get some. You'll need it eventually anyway.

Have any MS70? That is my go-to for de-crudifying silver, I'm pretty sure it works on PVC residue as well.

A picture would help determine.
When are you going to be in the shop?
Just call BJ and she can set up a time!
Lab grade acetone is easily available ... do not use polish remover.. too many have additives...soak for a while and then dab (not rub) with a Qtip....Cheers, RickO
Or return it.
Can't do that... I bought it because it was a specific unattributed VAM. The PVC was clearly visible in the seller's pics, too. It looked like it could be removed so I bought it.
MS-70 will often lighten toning more than acetone. Best to start with the acetone. Fresh, bright green PVC, can be removed with a sharp toothpick using a stereo microscope. I'm so mad because I just conserved perfect examples of the soft green crud on a Seated dollar and the dry harder PVC on the surface of a seated half dollar.
The important thing about professional conservation is magnification. You cannot see the micro-damage you may often do to a coin while playing around with your naked eyes.
Peace Vams with globs adds character!
Return it?
Good luck !!!
I used some clear nail polish remover (no additives were listed on the bottle) on a qtip. It came right off. Rinsed with alcohol, them warm water. dabbed with towel and it looks good. The glob came off easily. This was just on the eye, but if there was pvc there, it is elsewhere as well. I will likely take Pat up on his offer for a full bath (for this one and another that has some surface issues).
That's good news! Care to share what the dollar is? I am curious.

i would use pure acetone. you can get some at any hardware store. soak in a glass bowl, rinse with distilled water...pat dry.
I want to know the Vam and what he thinks the grade is!
If you rinse with alcohol then there's no need to rinse with water esp. if it's tap water. Normally the opposite is preferred where you use alcohol or acetone to remove water. A little charcoal starter on a Q tip would work too.
Dab it off with a Q tip. Soaking in acetone just coats the whole coin with the stuff. Not sure why you'd rinse with water. Go to WalMart and buy a can of acetone and while you're at it pick up a plastic spray bottle. After you've removed the PVC as best you can see with a loupe/magnifying glass, grasp the coin edge between your thumb and trigger finger and while holding it over a glass container spray it with acetone and set it aside to dry.
@grip,
Since EVERY COIN IS DIFFERENT, this can never be an old and boring topic, especially for the new members.
I misspoke/mistyped when I said unattributed. I meant unlisted. It is a 22P B2a reverse. The coin has very clear gouges over IN G that are not listed (unless it is in the 2018 Supplement which us not out yet).
