Pics are a bit grainy but it looks like a nice example. Looks like full steps I think.

I am no expert on these - are full steps rare on 1961 proof nickels?
No proof, MS Philadelphia mint. Im new but not that new to at least my coins. But I imagine if you think its a proof you like the coin lol
You do realize that in 1961 all proof coins were minted in Philadelphia, don't you? What makes you think it is a business strike?

I think it is a proof as well. I grade it near PR63 or Genuine Questionable Color UNC Details
If it is truly a business strike then it is an outstanding example.
1961 proof sets came in soft mylar, and there is a sort of metallic cardboard shield in the set that says "US Mint Philadelphia".
The set does not say "proof" anywhere on it, except in the lower left corner of the outer envelope it says 1961 PC.

No sir, no where did it say proof set. Amazing enough I have a 1964 Jefferson nickle that looks just as good.
That was my point. The proof sets did not say "proof" anywhere on them.
Yes, everyone of them, as if the set had been taken from the first strikes. What does the pc stand for? I don't have the envelope any more, so I cant be positive.

Well I am sure you know considerable more than I do and I will have to wait until the grade comes back to know for sure. As far as color, the flash and position does wierd things, but I don't have the highest quality cam. Thank you for your responses.
PC stands for "proof coins"....
I strongly suspect you cut open a proof set.

Thank you, I appreciate the kindness and honesty. As I said, Im new so I cant hardly argue with an empty gun for coins lol. Not sure what proofs are worth, but I lije to think they'd grade better than some have suggested lol.
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Nice coin. Are you having it graded because you like it? If so that is all that matters.
It is a Proof Nickel no doubt. The surface is mirror like in the fields. Proof is a special type of coin not made for circulation.
For resale The 1961 Proof nickels are not worth much, around $10-15 unless they have a high grade and a cameo or deep cameo.

To the OP what made you decide to send this one into PCGS? to grade along with other the monetary so called worth ? What were the other 4..

Well I want to thank everyone for the much needed info. I thought I had a business strike coin, but there is no doubt after seeing the responses I was unknowlegeable about Proofs were minted in Philadelphia. Like someone suggested, I will consider it an education, less expensive than some of my other life tuition cost lol.
As for the others, I sent a 1961 Franklin Half. A 1964 Kennedy Half, 1964 Nickle, and a 1964 penny, all proofs as I now understand. But I'll share the pictures of me recent education nonetheless lol.

A mint set would have double mylars with a D mint mark set as well as the P mint mark set. They also had color on the edge.
"PC" on the envelope is a proof set. "Proof Coins"
Mint sets sometimes had UC on the corner for "Uncirculated Coins".

Welcome aboard, that's a nice BLUE PROOF Jefferson, common in the early 60's but well sought after by some collector's, and some may even pay a small premium for them

I have a 1961 proof set with a blue nickel, which I love.
That’s a very pretty 61 nickel you have there. But! I would bet my bottom dollar it’s a proof coin. I must say I do like it as a pretty coin.

Just a friendly word or two: Misspelling nickel as "nickle" and using the term "penny" rather than "cent" rankles a lot of folks around here. Your posts will be treated more seriously if you conform to those conventions. Welcome to the board!

A couple or few have asked why I sent my coins to PCGS. The value one can receive over another grading company, even if I don't sell a coin, one day my children may.
