I have my limitations with these types of threads, and have reached beyond them.

NGC, PCGS or old ANACS. Don't buy CAC or any other stickered coins.

Limiting oneself to only one service and needing a sticker is completely laughable to me.

Some buy stickers, and plastic per say, the rest of us buy coins. Lulz

@Cougar1978 I think the poll was directed at collectors and not dealers and their inventory.

I prefer PCGS holders but will buy anything I like regardless of the holder. As a collector I don't care about the CAC sticker but when it comes time to sell I'll probably try to get me some stickers!

Clearly buying raw is not an option. LOL

I bought a raw coin from a horrible photo last night for $900 :o:o:o

Sometimes you can tell that it is just a bad pic of a nice coin...….especially if it is a modern. You would be taking a big chance if it is a classic era coin or before.

One of the only problems with a CAC sticker is you must have a back up:

There are more stickers to have; would that double or triple the value?

Collect what you like; CAC can’t tell me what I like. If a coin I want has a sticker on it and I want it enough, then so be it

17 out of 18 PCGS & one NGC crossover.
16 out of 18 Non-CAC & two where I had to buy the bean. (since removed)

Thank you to everyone who has responded! I intend to leave the poll open indefinitely, but the results are a bit surprising to me (granted of course that the poll could have been better designed, and this is not a scientific sample). The purpose of the poll was to ascertain how large the CAC only cohort of posters was on this forum and to further distill the group down to service within the CAC only group.

So far to my surprise, roughly 1 in 5 are CAC only (8% PCGS or NGC CAC only accepted; 13% PCGS-CAC only; 0% NGC-CAC only) versus 4 in 5 that fall in the catch all option for everyone else (79%) (total sample size, n = 105). I had expected that the CAC only number would have been much larger given how vocal and heated the CAC threads can become.

    Thanks again everyone!

I can envision an old, old ANACS style photo certificate coming with each slab in the future. One side will contain a high image resolution of the coin and the reverse will have space to collect all of the relevant stickers (CAC, Wings, Photo seal, PQ, Tomaska, etc.).

No way it would get boring and annoying if I only worried about purchasing a coin with a sticker only.

Here is how I look at it:

They say that people who go to college earn much more in their lifetime than people who don't. However, smart people also earn much more in their lifetime than people who are not as smart. Smart people tend to go to college more than those who are not as smart (there are exceptions, of course). So, those people who earn more in their lifetimes, was it because they went to college or because they are smarter ? I think the latter. Smart people who don't go to college probably earn as much as college graduates, on average.

    In a similar fashion:

CAC coins tend to sell for higher prices. Nicer coins also tend to sell for higher prices. Does a CAC coin actually sell for a higher price because it has a "CAC" sticker, or because it is a nicer coin ? I think the latter.

Or...CAC is like training wheels for your bicycle when you are first learning to ride.

Or...Like this so you don't make accident :D

I agree that part of the premium for CAC coins is a reflection of (in general, with exceptions) an increase in quality; however, the increase in price is not always commensurate with the increase in quality. I think there is some sticker premium too. I also say that because of the prices that some unappealing or CAC "error" coins fetch. Those that confine themselves to CAC only and bid against each other also risk the creation of artificial rarity based on the low number of CACed pieces by virtue of supply and demand dynamics. It is difficult to tease apart to be sure.

Anyone who buys CAC only may miss out on first shots from old collections.

The analogy is not apt. The training wheels are usually ditched early on or the child will be mocked or teased.

@ReadyFireAim - I could also analogize CAC to an insurance policy but no one pays 30-40%+ premiums based on the face value of the policy in most cases.

I had to vote for PCGS or NGC with a bean. I have a few coins I'll keep for myself no matter what but most non beaned duplicates get sold.

You could also say that anyone who buy's PCGS only may miss out on having the best coins in their collections. I like a coin I buy it stickered or not.

I prefer PCGS coins, but I will buy NGC coins if I like them. CAC can be there or not be there. It’s the coin and the price price that matter. I probably have 10 or 12 CAC approved coins.

I am more apt to buy NGC approved tokens and foreign coins, but in truth I would prefer to buy those pieces raw.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Gosh been a while since I've even bought a slab as most all my newps have been raw.

Sure, I will take whatever bean, sticker, shield, stamp or rating of extra super duper approval that is out there. I won't pay any premium for them, but they are nice when you go to sell.
