1994 POW,Vietnam Veterans,Women in Military Service Unc Dollars

ECHOESECHOES Posts: 2,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

In '94 I purchased the 3 coin Unc set. I want to add the individual packaged coins to my collection.
I have not been able to find any info as to how they were packaged at the mint.
The Proof coins were packaged in this manner, were the Unc's similar?
Photo's would be great...

    Similar and different. I picked these up in 1994, both UNC and Proof in the three holder cases. Here is a link with the mint images;

Both of my sets are like the three coin set above. I never especially noted how the singles/individual coins were packaged.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for.
Should also be a 'plastic tray' that the sleeve fits over.
    Thanks~

I bought a set for my dad, as he was a POW with the 82nd Airborne.

I don't know why, but I love the modern commemorative silver dollar coins.

Lots to pick from and the prices are not all that bad.

The price is definitely right when it comes to these. 69's trade without much premium if you are patient and not picky about the year.

I have been meaning to pick up the Viet Nam Vet coin.... will check ebay later. Cheers, RickO

I run into these issues time to time at the local shops I visit.
99% of the time the 'plastic tray' and outer sleeve are missing.
The hunt goes on, and this is what makes it the most fun...

    Uhmmm... okey...

The plastic tray was almost certainly a generic piece of mint packaging with no way whatsoever to link it to a specific product. Probably used for several production years running. My very very best guess is that if you are considering this important (and are willing to pay for it), lots of people can sell you something passable.

I have several of these trays that I've picked up over the years.
It would be the outer sleeve, and COA I would consider important to have with the purchase.

This line of thought makes me wince, but how much extra do you consider the outer sleeve to add to the value of the coin?

  • ECHOESECHOES Posts: 2,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

None what-so-ever. This is how the item was issued by the mint.
If adding to my Collection I would want it in the same packaging when issued.
No way would I pay 'extra' for the sleeve, it's part of the packaging.

When I buy Rice Krispies, I can't eat the box.

  • ECHOESECHOES Posts: 2,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

    That's not the point.
I have a complete set of Modern Commem's (Half and Dollar) in Uncirculated 1982-Date.
Most of these purchased directly from the Mint. In this case I purchased the 3 coin unc set.
Memory fails me as to how they (individual dollar) were packaged, hence the OP.
If I were to find one of these issues in a local shop, and the Dealer told me the outer sleeve and tray were 'extra' to the purchase I would pass, and think twice of doing business with him/her again. OCD I would guess. The POW is a $75-$85 dollar coin, if I were to purchase I would want all the packaging as issued.

Would you buy the Rice Krispies in Just the bag or with a crushed box?

Now this is what I need to get into. The current Mint Offerings are of very little interest to me. However, a few of the older issues are if interest. The reverse of the POW Coin always struck me as very cool.

A lot of folks that collect these want all the original packaging.

After five military moves since I purchased these, I can't seem to locate my trio sets in OGP.

I started this thread in Sep 17, I was finally able to locate and purchase a 'compleat' example of the POW issue. IMHO these are scarcer than one might think...
I have several more to acquire...

I gave up trying to keep all of the original packaging. If you have a full set of unc and proof dollars it is over 160 coins and the packaging is huge. I have the coins in the mint capsules housed in two binders.

I’ve always liked that reverse with the eagle breaking free of the chains and the ring of barbed wire near the edge. Great imagery perfect for the theme and message of the issue which is not common on modern commems.
