If you could own any piece of memorabilia or card what would it be?

LOTSOSLOTSOS Posts: 1,303 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’m sure this has been asked before but I’m interested to hear what current active members would choose.

The post about Gretzky’s 1st game worm jersey got me thinking. What would the ultimate piece to your collection be? It can be an item that is actually known to exist or that is believed to exist. Price is not a consideration.

Mine would be one of two items both related to the same event. It would be either Mike Eruzione‘s stick from the Miricle on Ice game or the puck from the winning goal. The stick is very clearly documented and is in the hands of a private collector. The puck has a somewhat murkier history and while also thought to be in the hands of a private collector it’s authenticity and exact whereabouts are unknown.

That moment is what my generation of American hockey players dream about. Sure it would be a toss up between winning any Olympic Hockey gold medal and the Stanley cup, with the Stanley Cup getting the edge in the modern game for me. But that one moment. That one specific team. Nothing could top that for me.

So let’s see what you dream of owning.

  • Hmmmm tough question. The first thing to pop into my mind would be the bat Ruth used in the ‘32 Series to call his shot.

I love your thoughts on the Miracle on Ice pieces - I was shaking just standing on that sheet of ice 5 or so years ago... the idea of owning something from that game - wow!

Since you already claimed that game, I’ll take the ball from the Lynn Swann tipped catch against Dallas in Super Bowl X. One of the most iconic catches from my favorite football player ever.

Going to be doing this often I think.

Expand on this for me as a non baseball guy. Has that specific bat ever been identified or is it an artifact lost to the past?

This play I’m familiar with. Was the ball ever singled out or is it a mythical item?

I haven’t dug into it, but I’m going to assume it’s mythical. I imagine the balls were swapped in and out of play back then with little regard to non-TD plays, but that’s just an assumption.

The year I was born ('79) and the years they won their division ('79 & '86).

He was my favorite player. I own about 20 of his game used bats and a pair of his rookie worn pants.

Memorabilia: The catcher's mitt Pete Rose knocked off of Ray Fosse in the collision at homeplate during the '70 All-Star game.

I'm not a big baseball guy, but I've seen that clip hundreds of times, heard numerous stories about it and was forced to reenact it on several occasions thanks to my older brother who was a big Rose fan.

Card: PSA 10 1986 Topps Patrick Roy rookie. PSA pop 8, and they don't show up often.

Memorabilia: Oddly enough, not a Roy item. It would be the 2001 Game 7 Stanley Cup jersey from Ray Bourque. It took the man 22 years to win a cup, and for my money Joe Sakic handing him the cup to raise it first is the greatest moment I've witnessed in sports.

Either a George Brett game used bat from the 1980 season (he hit .390 that year) uncracked
or a Willie Stargell game used bat from the late sixties or early seventies uncracked.

Or either of their rooke cards in PSA 10 as long as it was deserving of the grade. With perfect centering.

Either the bat Steve Garvey used to hit his homerun in game 4 of the 1984 NLCS, the bat Tony Gwynn used to hit his homerun in game 1 of the 1998 World Series, a game used helmet worn by Dan Fouts, or a game worn Padres helmet from Dave Winfield.

Anything Fisk used when he waived the game 6 homer fair ... jersey, bat, helmet, whatever you got.

Yes I know the Sox lost that series but that is the iconic moment of my childhood

If those are unavailable I’d also be interested in the flag Jim Craig wrapped himself in after the Miracle, or the the trunks/gloves Tyson wore when he knocked out Spinks

The Roger Maris 61 home run bat. Unfortunately the Hall of Fame beat me to it.

But I'll tell ya, if the Hall of Fame ever has a yard sale with that bat being offered, I'll be there. ;)

Stick, puck or Jersey from "Henderson has scored for Canada!" (to the uninitiated, the 1972 Canada-USSR series is the most dramatic sporting event ever. The Miracle on Ice was unbelievable, but it kind of pales in comparison. This is from a die-hard hockey fan. There are two really good documentaries on YouTube. One is narrated by Peter Coyote called COLD WAR ON ICE).
A game use mask of Bernie Parent or Pelle Lindbergh
    Mike Schmidt game used jersey.

So as to not hijack the thread and with full respect to LOTSOS' opinion:

Reasons why I am enthralled by the Summit Series relative to the Miracle on Ice.

Canada comes into the series heavily favored, not only to win, but possibly blow the Russians out of every game.
Game 1 at Montreal, it appears that will be the case as Canada scores in the first 30 seconds and has a two goal lead five minutes into the game. The Russians keep their cool and proceed to blow Canada out, 7-3. Fans in Canada are stunned.
Game 2 in Toronto, Canada storms back 4-1, highlighted by one of the most spectacular goals I have ever seen: a Peter Mahovlich short-handed goal.
Game 3 in Winnipeg, Canada coughs up a lead and the game finishes a tie.
Game 4 in Vancouver, Canada gets dominated and the fans turn on their guys and boo them. A sweat drenched Phil Esposito delivers his famous "address to the nation" in an on ice post game interview.
Canada gets to bond over the next two weeks which include a couple chippy games against Sweden.
Game 5 in Moscow, Canada again coughs up a lead but gains confidence that things are coming together. Paul Henderson crashes headfirst into the boards. He suffers a concussion but cannot handle the thought of not playing and tells the doctors he can continue. Still, Canada is down 1-3-1 and must win all three remaining games in Moscow
Game 6, Canada wins a tight 3-2 game with Henderson scoring the game winner in the 2nd period.
Game 7, Canada comes from behind. With about 2:30 left in the game, Paul Henderson goes through 4 Russian defenders, including splitting the 2 defensemen, and beats Tretiak, giving Canada a 4-3 win. it, too, is one of the most spectacular goals I have ever seen.
Game 8 begins with the Russian's changing the referees just before the game. The first period is a parade of Canadians going to the penalty box. By the end of the 2nd period, Russia has a 5-3 lead. Phil Esposito proceeds to strap Canada on his back, scoring one and assisting on a 2nd to tie the game. On the game tying goal, the goal judge doesn't turn on the red light. Alan Eagleson becomes irate, believing Canada is being cheated. Red Army Guards begin to manhandle him and Peter Mahovlich goes into the stands to rescue him. Eagleson is escorted by Canadian players across the ice to the Team Canada bench, all the while flipping off the Moscow officials. With the game tied, Canada is informed that, due to goal differential, Russia will win the series. With less than a minute left and the face-off in Canada's zone, Phil Esposito huddles his line together and tells them they are going up the ice and score. As Canada moves the puck up the ice, Henderson calls Mahovlich off the ice and with 34 seconds left puts home his own rebound to win the series.
Hockey then begins its evolutionary step forward in both style of play and sources of talent.

The Miracle on Ice was the single greatest upset and the tipping point for making the game truly international. However, and this is my opinion, it was just one game. USA went into the third down by one and got the game winner with ten minutes left. While the Soviets managed to put on pressure, it was not particularly overwhelming. Craig had to be very good, but not spectacular. While there was tension, I never felt the outcome was in doubt.
The story is helped by the blowout sustained in the pre Olympic games, the devastating defeat of the NHL all-stars, the 1st period buzzer beater by Mark Johnson and the inexplicable pulling of Tretiak for Myshkin. However, the play of the game was very good but nothing spectacular. Had it ended like the 2009 Stanley Cup Final, I might feel differently.

    My apologies about the ramble.

As Forrest Gump said, "And that's all I have to say about that."

“Pales by comparison” is kind of, no, is a big stretch. Let’s just agree to disagree.

I do most definitely appreciate your enthusiasm for the exhibition series. I have it on DVD and have watched all the games many times. It was fun hockey to watch.

I would like the ball from the last pitch that Tommy John threw in 1974 before undergoing the surgery named for him, and then I want the ball of the first pitch he threw in 1976 upon his return. Two pitches that mark the end and beginning of very different eras in baseball history for pitchers, at least.

I think Id most cherish something that Ted Williams used as a pilot during WWII. To me, his aviator hat or bomber jacket would be pretty awesome pieces to own. Im no Red Sox fan or even much of a Williams fan in a baseball vacuum. Ted's willingness to sacrifice for country, as well as his renown abilities as a marine pilot during the war, just make his story very, very cool to me.

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.
