Making the error guys cringe - exchanging a split Double Eagle for a good one - 1878

Director Linderman sent the Double Eagle to Superintendent Pollock to exchange for a good one because it "Split during manufacturing".

While I'm almost certain the coin didn't survive - and it doesn't mention how it split, I can imagine it would be high on the error collector's list of desired gold coin errors today.

On the slight chance this somehow made it out of the mint, anyone ever seen such a thing? If not, post a gold error coin for the fun of it.

I've seen several gold dollars and one large clamshell $5. I have a split Franklin in my teaching set that makes a dull thud when dropped on a stone table. The former owner sent it to the Treasury as a C/F. When it came back as a genuine coin, he told everyone that they had made a mistake! He would then drop the coin to prove his case because it did not ring. He never noticed that the edge of the piece was split much of the way around!
