There would have to be one heck of a backstory for those two rarities to pop up together.

Besides, they don't look quite right and are both darkened.

Rims don't look right. I say fake. They also look artificially darkened. You can find the same fakes on eBay. Pull one up and compare.

On the 1955's I see that the doubleing on LIBERTY is opposite what it should be. The second, stronger LIBERTY should be to the south, not north. The letters in TRUST should be a little smaller on the right than the left, and the tops of the T's should not be directly in line with each other. On a genuine coin the lapel is doubled.

On the 1943 above the 4 in the date is too high. The letters RIBUS in PLURIBUS are uneven as if drawn with a crayon.

    Fake as fake can be.

Fake. Whoever owns them should be advised there is a reason they are not in a slab. Too bad because I think this stuff frustrates collectors and causes them to avoid coins.

I would wager the '43 will stick to a magnet while not a good Picture, I would find the 55 'guilty by association with the '43 fake!'

Why would you bet that the 1943 would stick to a magnet?

MFeld: With the photos OP provided which he admits are not too good, a magnet wou the first in hand test I would take before weighing it. There are huge numbers of copper plated steel cents. I paid a quarter for an attractive one years ago. A small magnet was included on it.

Thank you and I understand that. However, if the coin is a fabrication, rather than a genuine plated steel can’t, you will get a different result. Is the magnet test truly worthy of a wager?😉

FYI the 1943 does not stick to a magnet.

So, a straight up counterfeit... :p

PTVETTER: I agree with a magnet as a first test as it is easy and a lot of copper plated steel cents exist. Did you get a chance to weigh and or put a caliper on the '43? I realize with the possibility of a huge profit, there are likely some dangerous fakes made from fake dies.

See the nose and the bow tie, top of the head, all around quality of the strike etc.

Are we sure that this isn't the missing "After Assassination" pattern piece of '43?

    +1

Based on the Lincoln profile, those look like fabrications from the same source. The 43 copper is, in fact, probably struck in copper.

As Elaine Benis told Jerry Seinfeld at the Diner climax episode................Fake....Fake....Fake... Fake...

The over lapping die strike on the double die will present itself to the right on the struck planchet. AS in on top of and to the right. Just like a Bar Cent U then S then A .......U topped by S, topped by A. not to mention the reverse die chip.
So, the 1955 will be on top of and to the right of a dbl die cent.

The "3s" are always the "red herring" give away on the copper 43's

How so on the “3s”? I’ve seen quite a few copies where the “3” looked correct.

Too bad... I am sure the owner believed he/she had treasure.....And the owner may not believe they are fake... I have run into that several times in the past. Cheers, RickO
