Home Metal Detecting

Got a metal detector for Christmas just tried it out today and wow

So I've always been fascinated by metal detecting, treasure hunting but just never got one. My girlfriend this year surprised me with one for Christmas but the weather has been awful here so I just went out this morning because a lot of the snow is finally gone. Got a hit in my first 10 feet assumed it would probably be a roofing nail or something dug down flipped the dirt over and BAM

In my case, finding a Morgan, not only on my first try but all time would probably be about the same odds as winning the lottery!!!

That Morgan is in great shape o:). How deep was it? Any other finds in that yard?

  • What brand of detector did you get?

Come on now...i think your girlfriend planted it.

And I'm not knocking her, that's a good girlfriend who wants to make her boyfriend happy. :)

Hey, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so. ;)

It does not look like any silver I have ever dug. Most are going to be white.

  • Wow, you fond a Morgan pretty fast! Sweet.

The first time I took my Garrett out I found an old can filled with diamonds and emeralds. :)

Please keep us posted on your other finds. Hopefully, they will not show any evidence of environmental damage either. Someone must have lost it recently. Happy Hunting! B)

  • Wow!

Silver dollar is a coin I have yet to find and I've been dirt fishing on and off since the mid '70's.

First silver coin I ever found with metal detector however was a Barber dime.

My first silver was a 24-p Merc many moons ago. Old baseball diamond on the bare dirt at third base. Still have it!!

My first find was a Jefferson nickel within the first 5 minutes of getting my first metal detector. I was about 12 and I remember thinking, if I could find a nickel every 5 minutes.... Well you get the rest. B)

It's all about what the people want...

  • About 15 years ago, I had a very nice 1963, Ford Galaxie 500 that I used when I went detecting. One day in a park I Found a 1963 Ben Franklin half dollar that had a bezel and a broken silver chain on it. When I got home, I decided to glue the coin to the steering wheel of my car. I put it on and got out of the car to see how nice it must look. As soon as I saw it mounted I immediately thought; if some wrong person saw it, they might break the window just to get at the coin. I took it back off before the glue dried. When silver hit over $32 an ounce, I sold it on eBay for $14.00. MDH

I continue to search for the 'big one'.... I am not sure what that will be, but will know it when I find it....The young treasure hunter in me (we all have that spirit) hopes it is gold, but would be happy with silver.... Really happy with a cache.... That is what I search for now... around old foundations, rock walls etc.. This area was settled in the late 1600's, so I know there must be a buried treasure out there.... ;) Cheers, RickO

That crystal skull you found was one of the nicest things I have ever seen found. Hope you get your cache when Spring gets here

@No Headlights ... Thanks for the comment... and I agree, was quite a thrill.... One never knows what may turn up in the wild out west... I have a friend who, while camping for a weekend and exploring out in the AZ desert, found the ruins of an old prospectors cabin.... while sitting on what once was the 'hearth' of the fireplace, he fiddled with a loose rock...picked it out of the spot and found a one ounce gold nugget underneath. Amazing... another buddy found an old rifle, still in grease soaked cloth (musket type) under old floorboards.... I miss those excursions...Cheers, RickO

I’ve been detecting for over 40 years. Such a great hobby. If I have a fishing pole or metal detector in my hand I’m having a good day!
    I enjoy your posts
