Speaking of Commems, give me your thoughts/comments on these 2 Grants, pros & cons of each

'#2 has a better strike, and looks better to me than the type of toning on the first one. However the photos of the second are a smidge blurry, so their may be some marks I'm not picking up on. #2 may have had a light dipping in the past, but it is still the better of the two IMO.
The first one would be incredibly tough to sell as it looks like Grant suffered majorly bloody head trauma.
I'd rather glance at a stack of $100 bills than that Grant with star.
First is unattractive to me. Not a huge fan of the 2nd but it’s better. I don’t like the toning on the first or the black spot on the 2nd.
The second is much better. Commems are so low now it may be an opportunity, but I am afraid of them.
Neither coin calls to me although if pressed I would choose #2.
1 has poor eye appeal and #2 is neutral to slightly positive.
I'm with the others for all the reasons they have mentioned above. Coin #2 for me, strike and eye appeal are better.

On the first coin, I don't mind the toning on the high points. The splotch by the date would bother me. It looks like there may be some ok luster, although Grants often have subpar luster. Overall, coin 1 looks more original than coin 2.
On coin number 2, I don't care for the shiny, lighter nature of Grant's portrait at all. And the coin looks dipped within an inch of its life. I don't like coin 2 at all.
The first coin has ugly toning. But I think if it were "dipped" or "conserved", it might look pretty nice.
To me, the second coin looks like it might have had a light cleaning. But it is still moderately attractive.
I prefer the second coin... appears to have a better strike and detail preservation. Cheers, RickO
1 has negative tone or stain and die polish does not help. It looks like it could be PL.
2 has a better strike and carbon spot over G
I am not a huge fan of either, but stars are not very common and sometimes you have to get what you can find/afford
First one low end, tough sell, second one looks decent.
Unless you need this for a 144 piece set, I would look for an appealing and inexpensive Grant over an expensive Grant w/star.
Commems and Early Type
First coin appears to have had heavy toning which couldn't be completely removed. I doubt it straight graded. Coin #2 appears to have had a bath, but an incomplete rinse imho. Looks like a decent 64 straight grade though.

To my eyes, the first example is unattractive, but original looking. I have seen a number of Grant halves with a similar appearance. The second one looks dipped and/or otherwise unoriginal. It’s very difficult to locate an attractive Grant Star at any grade level.

1 pass, #2 keep. The Grant with star is one of the keys to the series. Any time you can get one at a reasonable price, buy it.
