Bought a Commem.

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,936 ✭✭✭✭✭

A little background. I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my dominate shoulder. I'm not allowed to drive so I'm stuck at home. What that means is I have a lot of time to do nothing, so I search eBay. I came across this Huguenot commem that had a pretty crappy image, much worse than mine, in the listing. Having never owned one before, I impulsed bid and won. I need some opinions on the coin. Grade? value? I have a 30 day return privilege on the coin. TIA. Coin is slightly darker than image.

Looks no problem circ. No pluses no minuses.
BTW I had both shoulders replaced. 6 weeks no movement the only thing worse was bolts in my foot. 6 weeks off my foot. I almost went insane. Made both my hip replacements seem like a vacation, up and walking 4 hours after waking up.

The picture hints to me it might be lightly cleaned.

I had my left rotator cuff done three years ago. This one isn't healer as quickly as that one did.

    Nice Morgan Half Dollar ;)

It's a very low relief flat struck design that needs some color to pop.

There is what appears to be a patch of parallel hairlines in the upper right reverse field. Those would disqualify it for me. :(

It's a pretty affordable commem in uncirculated grades. If all that stuff in the reverse fields is on the coin, I think you can find a nicer one.

Good luck on the recovery. Rotator cuffs don't deal very quickly. You'll still be seeing improvements at a year.

62 or 63 details. Fairly common commemorative. I definitely have seen worse.

AU Details... Take a closer look and you'll see rub on both sides.

You could buy an MS65, MS64 or an MS63 for roughly $170, $125 and $110 respectively. Yours looks approximately AU50 and possibly cleaned.

Unless it was really cheap, it wasn't a score. You can buy slabbed ones pretty cheap right now.

This is a top of my head guess. I guess cheap is $30 or less.

I like it. Appears to grade about AU-55. At that level, there is not much difference in value in the surrounding grades.
The only potential drawback I see is it looks like it might have been lightly "wiped" (from upper left to lower right) in the area between the head and the "AME" of AMERICA. If that is the case, you could carry it around as a pocket piece for a while to wear it down a little (to EF-45 or so) and the value wouldn't decline any (and the wipe lines would be gone).
