One of the first lessons I learned in collecting coins is that GOOD ain't good. Such a funny scale, Poor Fair Good Fine Almost Uncirculated and Uncirculated.
Why not Awful, Weak, Poor, Good, Nice, Sweet and Uncirculated?

In today's "grading system" is is called "gnomenclature."
On some auction descriptions, writers have code words if they actually hate a coin. "Oddly lustrous" (exaggeration) might mean the suckers been polished and no one caught it. I wish there was a code key for sale somewhere, rather than having to figure out what each writer is saying.
In life its usually the old birds teach the new birds. But in coin collecting, the old birds refuse to learn or change, so we are stuck with a bunch of stuff I wish they had never started! Besides the grading system as it was known 40 years ago, things like 1955 poor mans doubled dies come to mind. Oh well...

Someday, numismatics will join the modern world and set standards. When that time comes, there will be no need for generalizations or nebulous categories. Sure hoping to live that long... but each passing year makes the odds longer. Cheers, RickO
