Really got everything I wanted. The 1940 dime was one I was missing from my Gold CAC set, the Buff really has great toning when imaged properly as does the lower cert number 1937 WLH (really amazing IMHO). The Doily CAC'd as did the old white rattler, and the St Gaudens I bought for under spot with ebay bucks also stickered. Very happy all the rattler Washies stickered and especially the one that went gold. I think the 42 WLK will come back PVC. Was also happy to finally have found two old holder Peace dollars that would sticker. I think this segment of the hobby has been heavily worked and I am not sire there are many left in old holders that don't have problems.
Just some stuff, mostly widgets that spoke to me and said “a fool and his money are soon parted”
I think 2-3 have a shot at gold, three have a probability of a red PVC sticker, and the rest...who knows.

Do you think they have a better chance at the Bean in those old scratched holders ? Did you know that CAC will resticker them in the new holders for a smaller fee. Personally I think you are better off reholdering first especially since the NGC coin number generally shows approximate date of submission and new holders show off the coins better.
The vast majority of those old holders will command a small premium just because of what they are. They do need a rub down or 2 with PlastX followed by a good waxing. When I ship coins to CAC they look as close to new as I can make 'em.

CAC loves older holders like these, I have had only 1 OGH/Rattler/Fatty not bean. Better to send them in these holders than new ones and I am sure they are capable of seeing around any holder scratches............

Some nice looking coins there, however I think you be far better off spending that nearly $250.00 on submission fees plus 2-way postage fees to just buy more nice coins that you like. For most, spending hundreds of dollars sending in relatively inexpensive generic material in hopes of scoring a gold sticker or two benefits only one party......

Interesting perspective and you could be correct. Here is my perspective on the process.
I don't consider any money spent on coin collecting, or the grading/stickering of those coins to be money wisely spent. Money that I want to use wisely for profit goes to my investment management account or my mortgage. Even those avenues appear less wise over time. Money spent on coins is purely for fun. I could lose it all and be ok.
I am building a set of GOLD CAC old holder dimes that I found in the wild. There is no other way to build that collection than this process.
I am also working on a rattler CAC set of Washington quarters. Hard to find in the wild and pricey if already CAC'd. Also, when you do find them, and they are un CAC'd and for sale, it is usually because they are covered in PVC haze.
I just did a search of CAC items in US gold coins on ebay and the total was 662 items. There are rarely more than about 40 NGC fatty no line holders with gold embossed logo's on the back. As each month passes, the search results pull up fewer and fewer, so what is really scarce for the collector? What will be really scarce 10 years from now? Watch Mecum auto auctions and see the price difference between two identical 1960's muscle cars when one has factory installed air conditioning. AC on a convertible has to be the stupidest waste of money on a convertible car, right? Most thought that, few paid for the AC, now those cars bring a premium. I see CAC gold embossed fatty holders behaving the same way in the future and am willing to wager I am correct. Doily holders and Gen 2.1 NGC holders are already well down this path.
I do have a gold type set in the Registry and I would LOVE to be able to find MS 65 or higher US Gold for sale on ebay that had any chance of getting a CAC sticker on it. I would be a strong buyer all day long. On the rare occasion that I do see gold on ebay that strikes me as nice for the grade, I buy it. I looked over my records and in the 5 years or so that I have been a CAC member I have purchased 14 gold coins from ebay (from AU58 to MS66) and sent them to CAC. 5 have not stickered. 7 have stickered. Two have gold stickered. So what I take from this is that nice for the grade coins are hard to find on ebay, gold in particular. So I buy the more expensive coins already stickered . I don't get to many shows and that is only going to get worse moving forward, so I go with what I can find on an accessible venue and have to be careful when buying coins based on pictures. I would buy more expensive widgets to send to CAc if I was able to see them in hand.
I agree with you that there is a lot of money potentially left with CAC and USPS, but if 80% come back stickered, I have usually covered my expenses. If the double eagle comes back with a sticker then I have totally covered my expenses for the box. It is like slow motion gambling...it takes me 3 months to acquire the coins and two weeks to have them looked at by CAC and maybe I lose $200. I can live with that! Thanks! - Pan

My son had to have surgery recently and we had to deal with the high deductible health plan so that was $6k spent. After, we were told he would need another surgery in about 12 months, which is a new year, and a new deductible. While I was doing the financial planning to have the money on hand when needed, I looked at how I spend money to determine what could be eliminated.
As part of the process, I asked myself if I was still having fun collecting and the answer was a pretty quick 'no'. So I will walk away for a year. After the next surgery I will see if I want to continue collecting. If I do, great. If I don't, I will sell and do something else.
