Big mint bag of 5000 lincolns

Guy I know has three large mint bags of lincoln memorial cents 1977, 1978, 1980. Asking $140 each. Anyone ever wade thru a sea of cents? And come out on the other side with satisfaction. Peace Roy

somewhere I have a mint bag of 1957 canadian cents . it smells funny , someday I'll dig into it
The 1980 might be worth it, as there is a known doubled die obverse for that date. The other two are not really worth the search (except for the unusual one off errors, like double strikes off centers, etc.)
I have searched sealed bags to no avail. But if you find one example of a doubled die, the chances are you will score several in the same lot. Could be a huge jackpot, but it is very tedious searching.

The price is much much much too high.
The melt value is irrelevant when it is illegal to melt them.
People are sending new copper bags back to the bank, bags all the way from 1959 to 1982. They might unseal them and cursorily look inside first, but to the bank they soon go.

Funny, you can legally melt silver coins down but not copper cents. It's easier on the environment to mine the copper cents. Other countries do it.

Silver does not circulate so the gov't doesn't care. Melting cents, on the other hand, would have a direct impact as it would require additional zinc cents to be struck (at a loss).
As other have said, the upside is theoretically there but not tremendous. You can take the cost and instead just buy some nice coins.
If the cost were less, I would do it, but not for 140 a bag.

I understand. Just making a point. Also there's billions of zincoln's out there. The economy would still chug along with out 90% copper cents IMHO. It's more useful as copper wire in this new world economy.
btw I might buy a bag for fun. Just to look at a pile of shinny 1977 copper cents.

I have looked through a few bags in my time.
No real scores except for a 1988 bag which yielded a bunch of DDOs.
The real.price to me for those bags would be about $90.
There's still a little room left at that number.
I think it's enjoyable looking through bags/rolls.
But maybe I'm a weirdo?
Who'd a thunk that this topic would receive such interesting responses. I engage in CU because I see a lot of experience and sage advice. The canvas bags looked reused and dirty but the sewn seam thread looked too clean and new. For a moment, I felt compelled to take the plunge but something said float this on CU. I'm glad I did. I see some selling for about $150 a bag on ebay. like it was said I thought it was pricey and walked away
The cent and 5-cent coins could be eliminated next Monday, and there would be no impact on any part of the national, regional, or individual economy. These denominations serve only to complete state sales tax transactions and the tiny discrepancies created by their removal are easily and cheaply accommodated by rounding. The maximum annual loss or gain is about 3-cents.
Without any data to support this statement, I would guess an overwhelming % of the copper cents have already been removed and stockpiled (or melted when copper hit $4+.)
It has been 25+ years since the last "for circulation" haven been minted, and the survival rate is not good.
It would have about as much impact as putting your hand in a bucket of warm spit, and seeing what impact it made when you pull it out. Thanks to John Nance Garner.

I read on the Internet that those in New Zealand have turned into Hobbits and all the house doors have been cut round.
I can get into rounding up or down. These politicians won't do it. IMO.

Don't assume rounding is going to balance out. About 10 years ago, I lived in a county where sales tax was 8.25%. If you ordered 1 item from the dollar menu at a fast food restaurant, the total was $1.09. There were 4 fast food places in town, and each one did this. In the grand scheme of things, a penny isn't a big deal, but they only rounded up.
Pass. Even if you found something of interest to the micro-variety crowd they would have to be slabbed and designated to have any real value. Slabbing costs would erase any profit potential.
Also, the price being asked for bags of those dates is much too high.
