First off this penny looks to have been replated.
The mint mark looks to be repunched.

I am not sure if it is an RPM or the replating made it look that way.
I am not even sure it has been replated but the bluing on the reverse is a good indication it was.
Sure looks replated to me. Snagged a novelty plastic holder of five replated 43's for a few bucks at the flea market, just to have for examination and comparison. Peace Roy

What is the 43 above the year date? Was it on the sheet before the planchet was punched?

Is this steel penny worth anything? Coin shops don't really know anything about it and have never seen it before...
