I want to know what each of you think is a "Monster" in your collection. Then critique everybody's "Monster" to se if they are correct. A monster to you might not be a monster to me. Lets just see what happens.

The critique portion of this thread might serve to subdue enthusiasm for posting favorites. Also, it would be nice if folks only posted coins they own and not coins that they don't since there is no doubt some items will be hammered by some folks.

Most people would not call this "a monster,' but it's one of the best looking Columbian Half Dollars I have seen.

My definition of a "monster" toned coin is one where the immediate reaction upon seeing it is a dealer's case or online is "How much?" Something that catches your eye and refuses to let go. It is always better if the toning is original, of course.

Sorry - I don't like the term "monster" and find it mostly obnoxious. A WOW coin can have many different looks, not all of them exceedingly colorful. I like toned coins and do not own a "monster" tone coin, however, I do have a few coins that I find breathtaking.

I too prefer to use the term "WOW" to describe spectacularly toned coins - I like to collect pennies that, when I look at them, they make me think/say, "WOW!" like this one...

These would probably be the closest pieces in my collection to what I think of as "monster toning". My definition falls somewhere in the area of "intense, splotchy toning, usually covering a multitude of colors but not necessarily forming a particular pattern".

I've got a variety of Morgans, Franklins and Washingtons that I consider "Monster" toned, but given that at least one of each has been posted above, here's a series that hasn't been posted yet...

After looking at so many toned coins, one realizes that monsters are truly very few and far between. However there are many other high end, very nice coins that are just below monster level that also deserve consideration. I submit one of mine, which IMHO the closest thing I have to a 'monster". I really can't say I own any.

There are little monsters, big monsters, red monsters, brown monsters, silver monsters, nickel monsters ....

To my eye, the 29-S Lincoln below (reverse in particular) is still the prettiest coin I have ever held.

I always thought of the term "Monster" as the BEST of the BEST. Two examples that come to mind are Aurora Borealis's 1881-S " The Moose". and WingedLiberty's 1964 Purple Kennedy. The Susan B. Anthony posted above I consider a monster as it is the finest example of a toned SBA that I have ever seen. Check out the #1 set of Commemoratives, the J & L set. The Antietam is a monster.

Spectacular is defined as "amazing, impressive, fantastic". I think this moniker would fit a lot of the wannabe monster coins that just aren't the best of the best. I like the term " a WOW" coin as well. I chose the term "spectacular" for my toned proof set which fits most of the coins in it.

Context is important. There are lots of pretty Morgans running around. It's much more difficult to find a beautifully toned Peace dollar or shield nickel for example. Really flashy luster under gorgeous colors does more for me than anything. I'm not usually a fan of pretty colors on technically low-grade coins. These float my boat:

My personal definition of a monster is something with outstanding eye appeal. A monster rainbow has to have at least 4 different colors IMO.
