Thanks! I ended up ordering a scale, so I can weigh my 1982 cents to determine which are copper. Dreaming of the elusive and near-mythical 1982D small cent...in copper!

This is my 'scale' for determining copper or zinc...
Use pre and post '82 pennies to adjust the "teeter" so that copper tips it but zinc doesn't
The scale cost me less than a dime :-)
Very clever! Had I not already ordered my scale to arrive today, I would have just used that! I also used my kitchen scale that doesn't weigh in increments small enough to catch a difference that small, in a different way to check. I put 4 non-copper pennies on the scale and it weighed 10 grams. Then I put 4 that I suspected to be copper on the scale, and it weighed 12 grams, so I know at least some were copper. The scale would show "10" until it reached "11" and "12" until it reached "13", so I can't know how many were copper. I was going to put 3 that I know to be copper on, and then add each of the 4 suspected by itself. But I was sleepy and decided to wait until today when my scale arrives.

What were the results with your scale?? Inquiring minds want to know.... Cheers, RickO
Nothing good yet. Most of my 1982's are copper, but none of the1982 d small date ones sadly. I will finish them up tomorrow and start on the 1983s. Have a nice evening!
Thanks. I bought the cherry picker book for pennies and am still not seeing clearly some of the difference pointed out. Some are so minute and subtle. But I guess as I study more images, it will eventually click. Thanks again!

Don't forget to also look for a 1983 struck in copper on a prior year planchet.
Thanks for the tip. This is so much fun!!

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

Basing small vs large on the shape of the 2's has always helped me:
