Do people really give away coins?

I see a lot of post about free coins here and want to know if it is a scam?

  • Well I’m new here just thought I’d ask

  • I’m not looking for anything free. I just started collecting and find it strange that someone would just give coins away

Tell us what you collect and you may get "lucky."

I've given away a handful of coins to people here. They know who they are. Normally it was because they fit into something that person was assembling.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

Welcome to the forum. One of the nice things about collecting coins is that you can make it as cheap or expensive as you want to and can have fun doing it. There are some very generous and knowledgeable people here, and the information that they share is oftentimes very good and valuable. Many times the giveaways are done because someone feels that doing so is worth the information that is shared here.

    Welcome!

If you are a new collector and someone on this board offers to send you free coins, accept the offer (If you are a young collector, please be sure to check with your parents first).
Use a postal mailbox address or a PO box if you're concerned about giving out your home address - God knows, neither Amazon nor anybody you've ever bought stuff on line from knows where you live :).
Seriously, use the private message function to contact those people offering. We love to give around here - right, @Paradisefound ? :D
Let us get to know more about you and enjoy your time here. Those who aren't chased off find it pretty great place.

In the past I have given coins as a gift to a GF like a slabbed PCGS MS69 ASE. Any material gift might be gold coin necklace, PCGS MS69 AGE / AGB depending on seriousness / type of relationship like a recent anniversary w a GF recently.

I don’t see coins as gifts for kids unless young collector. I have given coins to young collectors at shows like BU state quarters out of a roll or circ Indian cent out of roll to encourage them in the hobby.

    Calvinhardiman:

I join the others in welcoming you to the Forum, and echo what they're all saying about this being a great place to learn & share info (and sometimes free stuff as well).

I started out a lot like you when I was just a youngster, laying on the floor of my grandparents' house looking thru loose change and filling holes (for all 3 main mints) in blue Whitman tri-fold folders. I never outgrew that stage, but have since expanded into various denominations/series oth U.S. & foreign. I still have every folder and coin (and then some) since I started many score ago.

I found this Forum a while ago, while covering strike duty & bored out of my skull sitting in the office for hours on end with nothing else to do, It was a Godsend, as it put me in touch with so many knowledgeable people and contacts full of info. And the opportunities to buy/sell/trade for what I and others needed was fun as well!

A lot of people have had similar experiences as I on this Forum, whether they are at my lower level of collecting or are experts in different areas and/or have a wealth of knowledge and sizeable collections. There's always something to be learned. I think a common trait of most of the people on this Forum is the desire to share their appreciation of the hobby in general or their area of expertise with others, either in the hope of fostering the next generation of collectors or to "pay-forward" the help they've received.

So if you have a few "holes" in your collection, it doesn't hurt to place a list on the BST forum. You may very well find others interested in helping outright or thru trades. And if you can't reciprocate, you can always "pay it forward" to others you meet down the road..............

    So, again, welcome!

    -- Dave

@Calvinhardiman Welcome to the boards! What's worth more than the occasional giveaways are the info and perspective contained here from some very experienced dealers and collectors that you'll learn by visiting this board frequently. Don't forget to use the search function too for old threads on various topics.

@DBSTrader2 I would encourage you to give away some of your CLCT stock! It would be most welcome B)

Catbert: Shows I still have a lot to learn.............. what is CLCT? Is that the stock symbol for this Forum? If so, BOY are you barking up the wrong tree! No stock holdings..................... :(

Paradisefound: I think I'd have a heart attack if I opened up my mailbox one day to find a gold coin in it!

Oh I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet ... each new forum poster is required to offer a coin giveaway before their 20th post. ;)

So what's it going to be?

I'm just kidding you, of course. :)
