I agree, it is not a solution. Only kicks the can down the road another year.

A nice gesture by the NCA, but the CSNS owns this debacle. Maybe by then the CSNS will have cleaned house.

That's just not right. The education needs to be free. Business can be business. Maybe just buy your own blue ribbon?

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Well....most of those scientist's are looking for supporters(Grants) or buyers of their ideas!

A nominal exhibit fee doesn’t seem like a big deal. In other fields, such as scientific conventions, it is customary to pay a fee for the venue and setup materials they provide, as well as the privilege of being judged/examined.

On the other hand, strong-arming you to stay in their hotel is kind of petty.

Good luck with the wicked witch of coins if she is still involved! >:)

Hello! I told everyone a long time ago-CSNS is a PRIVATE show-not a club show any more.

I actually like collectors displays at any show. I think charging is cheesy to the nth degree. I'm sure they are charging what a table really costs them. I believe displaying coins at shows is really educational and is rewarding to the collector.

Let me see if I can help out here. I know a few people.....

I think the people that go through the trouble to conceive, create, travel and set up for educational purposes exhibits should be paid for their hard work. Not the other way around. What kinda crazy idea is this?

CSNS doesn't actually own the show? How does that work? Do they just rent their name to it???

Tough pill to swallow for the exhibitors. Having served on a coin club board, shows are expensive to run.
Time will tell how this will play out.

    Easy

    Thank Laura for her efforts
    Thank NCA for their generosity
Don’t stay at the CSNS hotel and let them know why.
Hopefully if they get stuck with a block of rooms they’ll get the hint
Okay I spent all my two cents
    Thanks again Laura!

The $75 is a "mandatory donation"

    Sounds like a tax

Perhaps the fee is a means to boost security. A few exhibitors have shown some concern. An officer is provided at the entrance, how are the exhibits guarded? Is there an exhibitor club?

Never did nor never will go to that show. I do exhibit at my local clubs shows and the ANA. But even at the ANA with all of the rule changes I have decided this year will be my last. And I would never pay to set up and exhibit.

I don't think this fee to fund something is a good idea. Exhibits should be an enhancement to cultivate collectors to strive to build a set. The vendors suffer cause exhibits will probably go down and attendees will notice and become aware of the greed and poor decision making by show organizers. Not smart. Peace Roy

That's a very nice gesture and a step up !

We do like to "vent", though ? (Or complain or whatever it is )

If you read the comments from Foley there is hope. It says that if people don't stay at the host hotel, they will no longer be able to hold the show in Schaumburg. GREAT!!!! Don't stay there, lets get the show out of suburban purgatory. Besides for the convenience, the "discounted" rate is over $100 a night more than other hotels in the area. You can get a decent room, maybe a $5 uber away for $60 on Priceline and that is the listed price.

I have been fortunate to win multiple awards from Central States over the years. The new exhibit fee, despite being named for a beloved icon of CSNS, is going to drive down the number of exhibits and symbolically be a deterrent to exhibitors who freely pour their time, talent, knowledge, and creativity into preparing their exhibits. “Coins, Collecting and Camaraderie,” I thought Central States’ motto stood for something.

The exhibits were always a big attraction, even if dealers didn’t particularly care for them. This move also is going to be a deterrent to numismatists, collectors, and walk-up traffic who might otherwise attend Central States shows, despite disadvantages such as reduced bourse hours. News flash! These people are among those who come to shows to spend money.

Since change is in the air, why not a new Central States motto? "The Public Is Welcome, Sort Of." I always try to focus on the positive, but I don’t see a strategy for growth here. SHAME!

I can't see where it would cost $40K per Show
for the exhibit area. I may be wrong, of course,
but it sure seems like a lot.

Yes, I know convention center fees are high, but that
seems like a lot for a relatively small area on the bourse
    floor.

"There is no case rental fee, period. Our exhibitors will continue to enjoy complimentary use of CSNS-provided exhibit cases and table space as has been done in the past."

"Yes, there is a $75 tax-deductible donation exhibitors must make to the Ray Lockwood Memorial Fund if they choose to exhibit at the CSNS convention. I will share more on this later."

Sure sounds like a rental fee to me.

The big question is....What's the bottom line for the entire show! Sounds like some of the show costs are being assigned to the exhibit area to me. IE Security, Cost of the Hall(dead space if no exhibits?), They pay their staff!!! Most clubs have ample volunteers!

  • CameonutCameonut Posts: 7,367 ✭✭✭✭✭

Sounds to me like the CSNS has a high cost venue that they can no longer afford.

They will find that they cannot cut their way to prosperity nor cover shortfalls with new fees. There are too many other shows with less cost and drama.

If I were a member of the CSNS I'd be asking for a venue change AND some sort of accounting of meals for the board. IF they were spending $70 a head for the exhibitor breakfast, how much for a board dinner? Perhaps an audit is in order.

Of course the person did not mention did the coin show make an overall profit on the show or not.

Its $75 pet exhibit so they are not encouraging you even if you decide to pay to make multiple exhibits

  • sparky64sparky64 Posts: 7,041 ✭✭✭✭✭

That article has a lot to sort through but it seems obvious to me that their costs are out of control. $10k per day for the space and I can't even fathom a $70 breakfast....

It's easy for me to stand on the sidelines and criticize but they need to reign in those expenses.

    CSNS statement here --https://numismaticnews.net/article/viewpoint-gold-prizes-still-go-to-csns-exhibitors?fbclid=IwAR0_A38sXPipHi54YfXg7-INmUVxX3drb7jlm7miW4XNBWw3kfr216fMkds.

They are talking about $40k annual expense for exhibits, but the exhibit fee would only cover a few thousand of that.

My question - how can all the other shows manage w/o exhibit fees? Maybe CSNS should benchmark the competition.

I love the show and PCGS is back this year grading. Great easy location. All good as far as I am concerned.
