I like it. It's modern but has aspects of 1982 & 1968 Topps integrated into it.

    Enjoy your collection!

Definitely a better rookie crop than I expected but still missing a "big one."

Per a post on cardboard connection:

After many years of putting 36 ten-card packs into a hobby box, Topps will give collectors 14 cards in a pack but there will be only 24 packs per box. Jumbo boxes are moving from 50 cards per pack to 46. The net result is a loss of 24 cards per hobby box and 40 per Jumbo.

    This is frustrating if true.

2018 I built a set through hobby boxes, although fun, I got no inserts of any great value and could have bought a factory set for less than a hobby box. I needed 2 Series 1 and 2 Series 2 boxes and 1 Update box to make a set.....I am not going to spend a couple hundred to make a set I can buy for $40.....I may buy an Update box as I got the full Update out of 1 box....

The last few years I have bought a single hobby jumbo of each series and received all the base cards.

I have noticed when I buy Hobby boxes (which is the norm for me) I rarely get any Variation SP or SSP cards. This year for 2018 I bought a Jumbo box for Series two Baseball and received both Ronald Acuna and Gleyber Torres rookie cards :p

I also have much better luck with key cards ripping jumbo hobby packs/boxes. J

Just ripped two 2018 update jumbos today to satisfy the urge B)

Yeah it's like Topps rewards you for spending the extra bucks on the Jumbo, although I did wind up with a crap load of dupes, that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten if I'd stuck with the Hobby box

While I agree and am sympathetic (and I'm not gonna do that either), that's not exactly a new phenomenon. I am opening some 1987 Topps boxes with my kids just for fun, and we are trying to complete a set the old fashioned way- from packs. We have opened 2 wax boxes (which would have been $29 worth of packs back then) and we still lack 160 cards to finish. I bet we open 2 more boxes (for a total of almost $60 in 1987 dollars) and still lack a few. Granted there are 792 in a whole set, and each box has 612 cards, but still. I remember being able to get those factory sets from Walmart or Target or Kmart for about $15. I think it's pretty clear that it's not about the economics of buying a box and getting a whole set, rather the fun of opening the packs and (now with modern stuff) chasing all of the inserts, parallels etc.

I don't usually collect the regular modern baseball, but grabbed a hobby box of just released Topps series 1 at my LCS to rip. These are the highlights.

    This was my silver pack.

Royals rookies and a few notable base.

    35th Anniversary stamped cards.

A regular Bryant and a variation SP.

    150th anniversary stamped parallels.

    My relic card.

150th anniversary medallion card with autograph on sticker, numbered 02/10.

  • I hate the stupid "manufactured relic!" How can that possibly be a "relic" when you just made it up?

In case anybody here hasn't seen, the jumbos don't have any SPs (though you do have a chance at SSPs in them).

There are some pretty cool SSP cards this year. Plenty already up on EBAY. I had to pick up a Mattingly for myself :)

I’ve ripped a couple jumbo boxes. Got a Rookie Redemption B in the first.

Also picked up a Mother’s Day (pink) Trout numbered to 50. It’s rarer than the /60 Trout that sold for $20+K last night - if only... ;)

Snagged an unsigned Rizzo medallion in the second and was shocked at how heavy the thing was (there’s a signed version posted further up this thread, if anyone wants a pic) - definitely a scenario where weighing the box would reveal something. No value to it but an interesting card nonetheless.

Im just not a fan of the design on 2019 Topps.....in particular all the dots that make up the bottom edges.

I absolutely love the '84 inserts this year, though. Especially the '84 relic cards.

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.

  • brad31brad31 Posts: 2,530 ✭✭✭✭✭

Actually like this year’s version more than most recent years. The dots remind me of a modern take on the ‘68 design the colored band on the side and bottom remind me a bit of ‘82 and the larger last name kind of makes me think of ‘73. Have not pulled the trigger yet on this year but think I will.

I guess the fact that pitchers and catchers will report this week brought me back to check out this year's Topps. Not a fan, although I agree it is better than the last 3 years. I mean that with the design of the card only! I know there are some hot rookies in those. I despised the 2016 design! :#

    Those are nice cards. However....

I may be in the minority but i wish Topps would stick with current players for the flagship release and leave retired players for other products.

I know it won't happen. Just my opinion.

I agree 100%. I usually end up trading, including as extras with the few things I have sold or offering them free if anyone wanted them and was willing to just pay shipping on any I would pull since 2010.

So how many cards are there all total? Seems like about 2500 with everything people have posted on here. A lot of card to put in bicycle spokes, if anyone still does that.
