English, with its cascading incursions of celtic, germanic and latinate words, "vowel shifts" and regional phonetic spellings, is a ghastly mess from a spelling point of view. Consonants, letter combinations and endings from bygone eras remain, yet are not pronounced or have some idiosyncratic pronunciation. Consider the ten different pronunciations of the "ough" combination in the following sentence:
"The wind was rough along the lough as the ploughman fought through the slough and snow, and though he hiccoughed and he coughed, he thought only of his work, determined to be thorough."
Yikes. It's why spelling bees are such a challenge in English, and are essentially unknown in languages that have reasonable phonetic spelling patterns.
Thanks to God I'm not a foreigner trying to learning how to read and write in this language!
As a few of you here know, I teach HS English (10th-11th Grades). 38 years now . . . and I will be fortunate to retire my second time just as this society fractures into linguistic oblivion. I too have done a bit of editing, both inside and outside of the numismatic area. I have learned to relax and anticipate that as the world changes . . . not all of those changes will be for the better. Still, it is not up to me . . . . . . . . . .

I could care less about grammar and punctuation.
I remember as a young man after just buying our first house we decided to remodel the kitchen. I was having a rough time attacking the new copier tubing from the source to the sink. I kept crimping the ne2 feeder tube. On about the fourth trip to the hardware store an elderly man who had been sitting there the entire day offered advice in a manner that would make any English major cringe. I didn’t care that he had butchered the kings English I only cared that it worked!
Judge not a man for his English but for the content of his contributions.

There's a reason English is the language of choice for over 25% of the planet, and growing. Also, I believe, there is a much higher percentage of English usage in tech, engineering, math, medical, etc. Hieroglyphics and acronym shorthand just don't measure up.

I guess it's just the sign of the times. Reading dozens of articles online everyday, you find a litany of repeated sentences, repeated paragraphs, typos, misspellings, misuse of word and on and on. You'd think if one's job was being a journalist they could at least run their article through a simple proper grammar and spellcheck in Word or something but the bar is continually being lowered. I'm just thankful that I speak and write English good.

This is an interesting post, only because it's wrong. It's a shining example of American elitism.
In fact, English is the 3rd most spoken language behind Chinese and then Spanish. It's spoken natively by about 360 million people, and an additional 600 million as a second language. Compare that to China, where 1.2 billion speak chinese natively, and it's not even a contest.
And for those accounting at home, rounding up to an even 1 billion speakers nets a share of 13.28% of the world, not 25%.
edit 2: and its not growing, either. Chinese is growing in the world. in the next 5 years, the breakdown of english language websites will fall dramatically. Right now, 24% of the internet is in english compared to 19% chinese. This is slated to change with the population of China gaining access.
I'm guessing you've been watching a few too many episodes of "Ancient Aliens" recently.

Ancient people were quite fascinating but it looks like we have the wrong idea. Somehow (analog language) we got the idea they were superstitious and could live and maintain a sophisticated economy without money or coins. "Ancient Aliens" is poor quality entertainment but the concept that living in ancient times was easy because they lacked science and shared a superstition is utter nonsense.

Just so we're clear, there are a few hundred million Chinese people who can't speak Chinese?
When you factor in literacy rate and babies, you get a number lower than the population.
The true numbers are probably hard to pin down. But its safe to say at least 20% of the world speaks English. Most of the numbers quoted here range back in years as far as 2003. Those numbers change radically every year since about 2000 because as America further globalizes its economy, the more people work abroad. India for example has seen a jump from 10% to 40% since 2003 because of the outsourcing of jobs of all sorts, from customer service, to programming.
Chinese, probably due to its difficulty, does not have the 2nd language population that English has and probably never will.
Most people don't use proper English in their daily life - why expect it here?
In college, I minored in linguistics. So-called "Proper English," was synonymous with the "Queen's English." Linguistically speaking, if the party you are speaking with can understand you, then you are using linguistically proper English.
Well now.... after reading this rather lengthy thread, I must say that I frequently see misspellings, poor grammar and even poor English (not related to non-native speakers). I have long ago decided that ignoring these issues on forums is the best course for me. Otherwise I would be in a constant state of irritation and probably banned for comments resulting from my outrage. Basically, I am a mellow fellow...so unless one of my major hot buttons gets pressed, I just move along. Cheers, RickO

Many school districts have already abandoned cursive writing and no longer include it in the schools' respective curriculum.
