Varieties requiring the need of a SEM are not to my liking. But, hey, whatever blows your skirt up..

Actually, if you look at "GOD", no microscope is required.

    Thanks, dawg!

I don't know why people in the coin world prefer to hate right off the bat it seems like. Still will sell for 4-500 dollars no problem, all day long.

    VERY scarce DDO. ;)

This is FS-101. Compare the OP coin to it.

Doesn't look like a match to me.....and I don't mean to be negative.

That has some potential. Your photos are decent. Can you get a image of a split on the edge of a letter as shown in the link BuffaloIronTail posted... the "ERTY" of Liberty?

Lost me at $400 to $500, pegging a value before proper research is a big red flag.

  • JBKJBK Posts: 14,640 ✭✭✭✭✭

I will monitor the thread as I have a lot to learn about the variety. I would have guessed MD myself, as the doubled letters look low/flat. Also, on some letters the doubling is above the main letter and then on others next to it the doubling is below.

If we can hammer out the best diagnostics I will start looking more closely at quarters. :p

You think I'm just coming up with these numbers off the top of my head?

Sounds like you need to take your own advice, so next time you can know what you're talking about.

I don't believe it's 1-O-IV/DDO-001 or, for that matter, a doubled die of any kind. Sorry.

Please don't be sorry. Thank you for your opinion. But I can assure you that in this instance you're mistaken.

Will wait for it to show up in the pop reports.

I agree with this, and I have handled this variety.

Some of the replies from the OP sound like familiar comments from past posts.

Damned if you do.........ditto if you Don't.

    I'm done here.

That's a pretty cool coin. You have great eyesight or are you like me? I go home and loupe all my change. :)

@cherrypickerrrrr Love the optimism... but, you will probably need confirmation from a TPGS to realize any potential windfall. Good luck!

It doesn't look like a match to FS-101/DDO-001 to me, either, but IGWT sure does look like it's on a doubled die. Notched letters apparent on N and D don't match the VarietyVista photos. Another thing that's confusing me is that it looks like the E of LIBERTY is strongly doubled toward the rim, while the R is doubled toward the center of the coin with what looks like strike doubling.

BER: BE look close, R is not a match

    GOD: OD are not matches

It looks like with the separated tips on E, you have a DDO.
However, it does not appear to be the DDO-001.
It could a new DDO, or possibly the DDO-001 plus strike doubling?
If it's a new DDO, that should be even better, right?

Thanks for sharing your cool find.

    Thx for the great analysis/comparison.

To me, the doubling the E on CP's coin looks to be going both upward and downward, while the general doubling on VV coin seems to be upward across the board. If it is going in two directions, wouldn't that imply either a tripled die or MD?

  • DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭

It's clearly not a match to the Variety Vista coin as shown by the great comparison pics provided by yosclimber. The doubling on GOD is completely different. I really think it is a different DDO. JMHO.

agreed. not the ddo claimed, yet does appear to be a ddo to me.

  • It is indeed a genuine 1965 25C DDO FS-101....combined with some sleight machine doubling, somewhat severe die degradation, quite a lot of wear and tear, and some mediocre coin picture taking skills mixed with too much flash and therefore some confusing angle perspective shadowing.......and will grade somewhere in the Extremely Fine region.

    END OF MYSTERY.

    Interesting coin cherrypickerrrr.
Do you have a pic of the entire obverse ?
    Congrats of the find BTW.

I agree when a coin has severe die degradation it can really throw off the perspective.
Let me show this as an example to some who might not have seen the effect of severe die deterioration.
Please do not confuse this with a DDO which this one is not.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
