1802?
I have no idea but cool find! That must have been quite exciting.

@MccarthyB.... Welcome aboard.... Nice find... There is also a metal detecting forum here you may like to follow.... I cannot see the date in those pictures, so unable to help. Cheers, RickO
Just taking a wild guess that this coin is
an 1801 S-216. The obv is too far gone to
be positive.

If you actually want help with this, you MUST post a whole lot better photos.
Yes. Please take it back out of the holder and take some more photos.
The reflection off the holder obscures the detail.
Ok guys, I hope this helps
Thanks for the updated images but unfortunately the coin is too far gone to determine the date.
Thank you.
The reverse is the type of 1797, which was used with dates 1796 to 1807.
So that doesn't narrow it down very much.

I tried increasing the contrast on the date area, but I couldn't really identify any digits (1802 on top for comparison).
You might be able to see them by varying the lighting angle.
I can tell by the obverse its not a '99 or '99/8, and from the reverse it's not an 1804.
I also think the '06 only used one die pair, so the reverse excludes that date also.
After that, I would probably punt, because it's not going to be worth anything, but still a very cool
metal detecting find. But I'm sure others are more persistent and skilled than I am.
Thanks for the info and on the find , I was thinking 1802 also.
