Many coins in many museums have been badly cleaned, but the vast majority at the Smithsonian have not been cleaned at all. As for the slug, It looks uncleaned in the photo and it grades 65 or so. Safe to say it has not been cleaned.

Considering that the dies were “lapped or polished between strikings”, it seems more likely that the dies were rotated.
