MK-- I have collected the 52 set and many of it's variations//variants. There have been several threads on it over on Net 54, and many ardent collectors of it there. I don't recall a Registry thread here, but maybe someone will recall one. I think I remember that over on the main forum here we once posted a full set, starting with Pafko and ending with Mathews, with different people posting scans of all the cards in the set in order

Do you collect the set ? With a couple of exceptions my set is ungraded.

    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

I think the big hitters in a set like this are so loaded they would never think to post on a forum like this. There are a few exceptions I’m sure but that’s a huge reason I’m sure the most prolific large set in the hobby doesn’t have a dedicated thread here.

Such an iconic set. Beautiful artwork. I've toyed with starting this set but I don't think I can afford a Mantle in anything close to decent shape. I just can't buy a slab with a beat up card in it. Personal problem.

I have pondered starting the set, backing away in similar fashion. The Mays and Mantle are true showstoppers but also come with a showstopping price.

There’s a small part of me always wonders if I should liquidate what I have, buy a 52T Mantle and begin anew.

As for buying a flip with a beat up card in it, I think there’s got to be a sliding scale there. I tend to agree with you but there are exceptions.

It’s a personal decision everyone needs to make. I personally have zero nostalgia for a 1952 Mantle, as cool as the card is. I would honestly rather have a gem mint 1974 common than a beat up ‘52 Mantle. That’s the great thing about this hobby, there’s an enthusiastic buyer for almost every card!

As a variation and master set type guy, getting 2 Mantles, Robinsons, and Thompsons was painful. Then there are red and black backs in the first series and the expensive and elusive gray backs in the 131 to 190 series. The Black Star Campos, and the missing front border version. The various House tiger variants. The Sain and Page variants. Even the Huggins Super set with it's meant other variant cards is not complete. And no set is complete without an unopened pack 😉

There are a bunch of down to earth 52 collectors on Net 54

Yes I am a 52 set builder, been building it for about 3 months now and am almost at 30% on the basic set registry. I’m doing centered PSA 5+ on 1-310 and 311-407 in PSA 3+. It is a very challenging set and I don’t know if I’ll finish it in my lifetime (I’m 43). But I plan to hand it down to my daughter as a family heirloom anyway. I’m currently #114 in basic and #52 in master. Set name is Mike & Kendra Knoght Family Collection (basic) and MJKnightJr (master). I also have a registry for all the teams for 52.

  • Here are my two favorite 52s to date in my set. The #2 Runnels has been subbed to PSA. Hope to get it back by February.

That's a sweet Pafko. I am also working on the set in PSA 6-8 range. I have 44 to go, mostly high numbers. I haven't crossed the Mantle bridge yet and I have no idea what I will do when I get there. It will no doubt be the last card I will need for the set.

I have about 250 different doubles if any one is interested in trading (mostly low numbers).

  • I have 26 1952 Topps cards with about a day left on eBay right now if anyone needs any of these.

  • I listed 70+ 52s on a three day auction to end on Sunday night. High numbers, black back's, well centered cards. Check them out!
