1997 Lincoln Penny - Large CUD Error

I would like your opinion on the grade and rarity of this type of error for 1997.
Should I send it in for grading or is it a waste of money?
Thank you

Major die break including the rim = Cud.

    NICE one.

In my opinion, grading is not so important as attribution/authentication of the error, and also preservation since it is a Zincoln.

I do not know the value so I don't know if it is worth slabbing. @ErrorsOnCoins will know what the market will bear on this one.

    Welcome to the forum @oldtimmer.

Very nice error. Looks like EOC has some good options.

That one is actually interesting! Nice find. As to value I will have to defer to the error collectors/dealers.

    Wow, very major.
    Crazy cool.
Worth a LOT more than 1c.
    Thousands of times more.
Did you find it in change?
I wouldn't submit it; not needed....will sell readily without certification.

Very cool, it is way beyond a cud. The die just flat out broke off a chunk. As far as the grade goes, it looks high AU but it might be because of the pics. I think that it would be worth it to get it graded, especially if you got it for face value or at least really cheap.

  • I was going threw a large water jug of pennies my friend had.
I was looking for wheat backs and memorial cent's I needed for my collection.
I could not believe it when I came across this penny.
My friend has been throwing his pennies into this water jug since the 60s.
The jug has been raided a few times over the years but there some very nice early 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s pennies with full luster.

The ol’ coins in the jar (or any container). I still do that, but it is all pocket change and I go through it and make rolls when it is overflowing.

Must admit not so much lately. The plastic bankcard has risen in priority for purchases for the last few years because of its convenience. ;)

Wow... major cud..... Neat find. Great error cent... grading and slabbing should ensure maximum value...If it were me, I would probably have it slabbed, not because I would sell it, but to preserve it. It is a zincoln... Cheers, RickO

I have one of these in my cud collection, and I paid $80 for it in 2013. I would guess it's worth $100 give or take.

@oldtimmer what did this sell for? Just curious.

Weird but I don't see a cud. I see missing metal as in detached lamination.
