    What’s the grade on that baby? I saw a 67PL 43-S Steel being sold at a local coin show for $1200...

    Always buying nice toned coins! Searching for a low grade 1873 Arrows DDO Dime and 1842-O Small Date Quarter.

    No matter the mint the die cracks seem to all appear in the same location reverse.

    How do you differentiate die polish lines from cleaning related hairlines?

    Die Polish lines are Raised lines on the coin. Cleaning Lines are not raised and they would run completely across a surface feature. Click on 1 of the Mercury dime pictures then click on the picture again and look where the Die Polish Lines run right up to the O in one but not over the top of it. If the lines were cleaning lines the lines would run over the top of the O.

    I only have one coin that shows die polish but the true-view doesn't show it off very well.

    My question is, what do the mint workers use to "polish" the die with...A hand full of gravel?

    I have some really nice '43 cents.... no die polish lines...but some would go MS67 I am sure... I should send a couple in..... Never been a fan of die polish lines... well, I don't dislike them, just prefer clean fields. They are generally easily identified anyway. Cheers, RickO

    Not sure of the grit size, but it would be sandpaper that left those marks on the striking die and subsequent raised lines on the struck planchet.

    i had a heavily die polished Barber Quarter that I submitted and was slabbed as cleaned. Sent it back in the holder with a notation on the form regarding the polish, and it came back 62

    I bought a NGC coin with heavy polish marks that I wanted to crossover but was concerned about.
    The only reason I took a chance was because it was CAC'ed

    It crossed at grade but made me a little nervous during the wait.

    It's just extreme die polish, no planchet problems at all.

    For those trying to figure out how DPLs work, remember the fields are the highest part of the die, while the devices are sunken (except for $2-1/2 & $5 Indians). When you polish the die, little scratches turn into raised areas on the struck coins. With a loupe it's easy enough to see the raised lines.

    I've always loved die polish lines. Here's a 1953-S Roosevelt Dime that had some serious work done to it.


    You can even find them in the Morgan Dollar series.
