Nice move PCGS. I'm sure the restoration group is ready to do their thing. Maybe the melted plastic protected the coins to some degree. We shall see. Peace Roy

Supercool of PCGS to step up like this...I'd guess that the coins will be fine...plastics can start to fold like that at relatively low temperatures (200 F)...note the paper cigar box and the currency survived pretty well...that safe certainly did its job!!

Best to Joe and all the others affected by the CA fires!!!

That is AWESOME of PCGS offering assistance in bringing back @crazyhounddog collection, and for David T. to express his sentiments.

I'm hopeful your coins are in better shape than what those photo's may lead one to believe. I think you'll come out OK.

I am glad that you finally got there, and glad that you got to your safes first, but I have mixed feelings on what was inside. Hopefully the bulk of the value is still there, just in need of new plastic.

As an aside, if the springs in your Kimber retain their "springiness", then that should be OK. But, I recall hearing years ago that if springs lose their tempering in a fire and no longer work as intended then they should not simply be replaced, as the heat treatment of the frame and barrel would also have been impacted.

Based on the condition of the plastic, the heat was not high enough to affect the heat treatment of any steel component which occurs well over 1000 deg F.

I'm optimistic, I think we will see Joe's collection come back to life. A quick video of the process would be interesting. Good luck with the collection Joe!

Great news that PCGS has stepped up to help salvage and re-holder the coins. Will be nice to get updates on the progress - I forsee an article on the website and in the PCGS Market Report coming within the next few months.

I am sure you are correct.

I was mainly raising the issue since there will undoubtedly be people in Paradise
who will find the surviving metal parts and they might be tempted to try to restore them, especially since replacing what was lost will not be possible for many people due to current laws in California. ;)

could the molten plastic adhere to

Any film makers here? This would make a good documentary film. Would be shown on Discovery channel or TLC Produced by PCGS.

I have no words to express my gratitude to this forum and to pcgs directly. You have all made a difference in this life turning event for myself and my entire family.
I also need to say I don’t have the time to answer all of the emails I have received since this horrible day but you better believe that when we can pull out of this dark valley I will.
Myself nor anyone in my family has ever experienced the horror of December 8th when the hellfire came through our town. The fire was moving faster than the bumper to bumper traffic was moving. I got a twenty minute warning that the fire was coming right down our throat. If I had more time you bet I would have got to my safe as it holds my lifetime collection of coins and my new Kimber. Pretty much all I could get into my car were the photo albums and some pictures off of our walls, but not many. By the time I was going to empty my safe into a gunnysack I didn’t even have time to spin the dial as I could hear propane tanks exploding and getting closer. Then as I was leaving for some stupid reason I locked the door. As I turned around I could see the fire coming as the wind was pushing it from tree to tree and along the ground at a incredible pace.
All of my friends on this forum along with pcgs has made a huge difference in helping us recover from a lot of anxiety this has created. The go fund me that was setup here on this forum from almost day one by my very good friend, Jim Bowling, was heaven sent. It helped in so many ways. But it was the caring, the prayers and well wishes that brought us strength and helped us all to carry on.
I truly wish I had the words to say to express how greatful, not I, but my entire family feels towards this coin forum. You guys. and ladies, are the best.
The best I can do is to say god bless you all. I wish you and yours all the best this world has to offer.
A very heart felt thank you.
    Joe and family <3<3

As others have said, Kudos to PCGS. They should post a video on their YouTube channel to show how devastating fire damage can be to coins and show what slabbed coins held in a fire-resistant safe look like after a fire.

This is also a great reminder to everyone on this forum to think about security and storage of your coins, valuables and family heirlooms. Hugh Woods through the ANA provides the cheapest coin/bullion insurance I have been able to find. Very easy to sign up with little to no records required to be sent to Hugh Woods unless individual coins valued at $5000+. Here is a link to a thread discussing the insurance.

It is also a good idea to keep a spreadsheet/pictures of each coin for your personal records so if something is stolen or damaged, you have some sort of record of ownership and possibly identifiable pictures or cert #'s you can provide to TPG's and to police.

Same with your house, most people have smartphones that can record video these days. Go through your entire house recording 30 second videos of EVERY room and the contents. This can be uploaded to youtube (for free if you have an account) on a private channel or put onto an external hard drive. This is useful if a flood/fire occurs and you have a total loss. Having evidence of your new 4K TV, expensive clothes/shoes will help when filing claims and can remind you of the exact possessions you previously had.

Stay well @Elemint @Kudbegud please keep your tickers going stong.

Still have a couple neo mags from taking hard drives apart. Very useful for many things like taking the ink tags off clothes that the cashier forgot to take off.

Of course the primary use is checking coins.

So glad you were able to salvage some of you prized coins. I just thought of this idea last night about what
the new labels on the conserved coin could be called. PCGS could easily print on the holder for example
"Camp Fire Example". Maybe add in the designation like "Camp Fire Example Buffalo". I original thought
"Camp Fire Survivor" but thought of all the folks who didn't survive so new names came to mind.
"Paradise Example" is a possibility too as I'm sure some other titles could be. Would have written this sooner
but I was out of commision because I had a heart attack last week and didn't have access to a laptop.
I can't emphasis strongly enough how important it is to know one cholesterol and triglyceride levels along
with average blood pressure readings. I also recommend angiograms and heart catheterization procedures
every few years. These tests will let the cardiologists know if your at risk for a heart attack or not. excessive arterial plaque is imo, the single largest killer in this country. It can be "Cleaned" out by the Doc's.. Eat healthy
foods, stay physically active and get your yearly checkups! While I was in the Hospital, I couldn't wait to
get home and see what was waiting for me in the mail. The toned 1935 S San Diego comm, the 2008 S PR70 Bald eagle and the toned 1893 MS65 Columbian were just what the doctor ordered! I'm very grateful God gave me a second chance once again. Stay well all and what a great forum this is.

I wish you a quick recovery my friend. This is great information you’re sharing with us all and we all should step up and start taking better care of ourselves.
I wish you all the best, Joe

So far all I can tell you is it’s like shrink wrap. The flips are hard and sharp so I might leave it to the experts to see if they can be saved. I’m afraid that I’ll ruin something and I’m not in the mood to do that.
Maybe if I get real brave I’ll take a stab but it this point they are really stuck fast in the box.

Joe I hope things are going ok for you and the family and you are getting settled in the new place.
Since the subject of preventing heart disease came up, that's something I have a strong interest in. For folks who do not have known coronary disease (no stents, bypasses, symptoms of angina) the best test for estimating risk is a coronary calcium score, using a special CT scanner. Costs about 120$ where I am, and I order a lot of them. Again, this is a tool for estimating risk in people who do not have heart disease that they know of (as opposed to Elemint who is in a completely different category).
