My win in Sunday's Legend Auction

There was some high bidding on this MS65BN 1914-S Lincoln. I counted 4 bids over the PCGS Guide. I ended up winning this, but at nearly 2x Guide Price. The underbidder was $100 less than my bid. What can i say, I wanted it. The 1914-S had been the "weakest" coin in my set -- and I've been looking for a killer 1914-S for my set for 5 years. This is the best one I've ever seen. I have a feeling this is even better looking in hand. I think Legend posts scans of the coin which usually mute the color and look. I've always felt the 1914-D was over-rated (overpriced) and the 1914-S was underrated (underpriced). Did you know in the 1920's the 1914-S was considered the key to the Lincoln series and was priced higher than the 1914-D and 1909-S VDB (according to David Q Bowers). By the 1930's the 1914-S had fallen to be equally valued to the 1914-D. Today the 1914-D is valued about 8x higher than the underrated (imho) 1914-S.

Legend's Auction Description Read as Follows:

Description: One of the FINEST 1914-S cents in the BN category. And truth told, that color designation does not do this gorgeous GEM any justice! Rich underlying reddish-brown surfaces have a bold satiny luster that blooms in light bringing out the cobalt-violet-teal overtones. Problem free surfaces and sharply defined devices are awe inspiring. Lot #34.

Notes: No CAC-approved 1914-S has ever sold via auction. Non-CAC approved examples have sold in the $720 to $1,116 range. None sold since November 2017. The current PCGS value is $1,150. We can honestly say that this coin is probably the prettiest of those graded, and there is just one finer in the BN category, a 66 that has never sold in auction. Bound for a very cool set of Lincoln cents. (PCGS 16, NGC 11, CAC 3). Estimate: $1.0k to $1.2k

Isn't it gratifying when you succeed in capturing a winner for your set like you did? I'll bet you were flying after you won. Congratulations !

I think you are correct on your underrated analysis. I'm not sure it's worth 2X guide.

I love the look of this cent. Sometimes you have to pay a steeper price for a coin that's been alluding you for years. I look forward to seeing the TrueView. It should make for a great match for your set and will look perfect in your coin board.

    Woohoo!

Just when it looks like your set can’t get any nicer, it does. I really admire your collection but mostly your dedication to it.

I agree that better lighting on that coin will likely reveal a jaw dropper.

I also agree about the 14 S scarcity in 65. You could hit 2-3 major shows and see 3-4 14 Ds in 65. At least that’s what I’ve seen. Yet one could go all year and not see a 14 S in 5. From your experience with the bidding, sounds like everyone else who cares knows that.

Great nab! That is a beautiful highlight for an already killer set. I'll admit it, I'm jealous!

While that auction was active I saw the reverse of that 14-S and it might even be prettier than the obverse. If you can, please post the reverse here. I remember it had very nice tints on the wheat stalks. It made me happily dream about what this coin will look like in person.

    Awesome!

That's a monster 14-s. Monster. Not shocked you had to pay up. Beautiful example. Congrats!

    Bravo!

Will you ask for a TV through the PCGS plastic or are you going to have it reslabbed and then rebean at CAC?

Andy Skrabalak at Angel Dees saw the coin live and said it's a slam dunk 66BN. So I will try for a Reconsider and get a TrueView.

Your win looks even better now. Legend left money on the table by not having better photos and you were the benefactor.

I agree. Your new pictures make the coin look significantly better. I didn’t pick up any of the blue before and it is dripping with luster. Great coin!
