What will cause this damage

    That coin has been in acid (or acidic environment) and the copper core eaten away.... Cheers, RickO

    Someone had a fun science experiment on that dime. S/he should have kept at to see if they could separate the obverse/reverse with the acidic treatment.

    I got a very similar quarter recently. Looks like the copper got eaten faster.
