Express package? This is not good.
A return package from CAC should have been sent registered mail with insurance. I am sure the Post Office wants to find the package or they will be paying the claim. All the postal employees that I have delt with on registered mail follow the postal policy and procures.
Looks like one of my first submissions to CAC as 1 out of 14 stickered.
While I don't know, I suspect CAC has private insurance and was probably an express mail shipment. I haven't done the math but that might exceed the insurance limitations of the USPS.
Oh wow, based on the list a few of these may have been mine, submitted by another party. No good!

what a terrible way to learn of a possible loss
To my knowledge CAC will only ship a package registered mail unless you have your own insurance. Only reason why I know is because I have tried to get them to mail them back express. They wouldn't do it because I didn't have private insurance. So I ended up waiting the 2 and a half weeks. But hey I cant complain. the package arrived. I hope they find those coins! that's terrible !!!
It states USPS. I hope it was mailed with adequate insurance.
USPS maximum registered insurance is $50,000. All other USPS types is $5,000.
Maybe a holiday season sub-contractor?
If the couple coins were indeed mine, I’m not at all worried. They were consigned to a stand up dealer. The only grief would be the numismatic loss.

Agree. Unless fully insured or registered, don't send anything of value into or out of California via USPS during the holidays or "contractor" seasons. Just my opinion based on personal experience.
The USPS is still working on the registered package I shipped that disappeared(obviously stolen by a USPS worker). Got a call from the Postal Inspector a couple of weeks ago(It's been over a year!). I'm pretty sure they recovered most of them...if not all but they paid off after rejecting my claim 3 times!
I'm really curious what they do with the coins after the case is finished!

That’s terrible. Yes, you will eventually get a check but some of the coins listed are not that easy to find. For sure I would rather have the coins than the check.

I had a PCGS MS68 1976-S Silver Washington Quarter back when they were a alot higher price than they are now. The slab got cracked into two pieces and I filed a claim. USPS paid with no hassle and let me keep the coin. I broke it the rest of the way out and sent it back to PCGS and it graded MS68 again.
The crack was above the coin and I was sure it would grade the same again.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.
Would like to hear follow up when actions are resolved.
People I talk to at the post office act scared to loose a registered package. She was sure she would lose her job if she lost it.

I suspect it was SOP! I submitted pictures of everything that was in the package. Funny thing was...the last call from the Postal Inspector was could I help him identify the 3 raw coins that were in the package. I told him...you have good pictures of the coins...coins are like fingerprints....no coin is the same. Haven't heard back but he claims he will inform me when and if there is a conviction! Ha Ha...we will see!
Amwld, that is a wake up, I had always heard that a lost registered was a quick settlement. Guess the days of Harry Winston shipping Hope diamonds is over.

Very sad... Although the financial loss will likely be covered, when a coin is lost it leaves a void. Well, for collectors anyway, dealers not so much... Cheers, RickO
Not necessarily. If you have your own insurance carrier, as this submitter likely does given the value, CAC will let you ship by Priority or Priority Express Mail. I believe you can use FedEx too if you give them your account number.

Registered, insured the only way to go with USPS for goods as described in the OP. If the total amound exceeds insurance limit then make another package.
Registered has to be signed for at each stop the package makes until it gets to recipient who has to sign for it. Registered is the USPS's top service and chances of a package being stolen by a postal employee are almost nil.
I can't imagine sending through the mail valuable coins, worth thousands of dollars, any way but registered, insured for full value.
Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.
