Best book for a friend who is starting out collecting gold.

He likes Saints and 10 dollar princess's. Any recommendation from a educational/starter information book you can recommend ??

Red Book of US coins if he does not have on. Will give all basic information like mintages, values, rarity, etc.
I like these....
The Handbook of 20th Century US Gold by Akers & Red Book by David Bowers
Encyclopedia Of U.S. Gold Coins 1795–1933 by Guth and Garrett
Fan of the Oxford Comma
CCAC Representative of the General Public

also Guth & Garrett's
The above books and 'Whitman Guidebook: United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide'

Study those books and you will be prepared for the gold coin collecting sickness - oh, I mean hobby.

Not a book, but basic equipment: scale and magnet.
There are other items but these are two inexpensive items that can save a lot heartache.
Tell your friend to only buy gold coins that have been slabbed by one of the major grading services. Tell him there are many counterfeit, cleaned, tooled, etc US gold coins in the marketplace.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

This is a great book if for no other reason it will get you excited and motivated to collect gold coins.
Doug winters books are excellent, but more dated/specific to regional mints.
Thanks everyone - as usual the forum comes through again. The first thing I did was take him to the ANA show in Philly this year and walked the isles looking at Raw vs slabbed, coins graded the same, but pointing out technical grade vs eye appeal, etc. But as you all know the "education" is the most important part. I thought a good couple of books will teach him what I don't know.
Thanks again
