Care to GTG on a generic Saint? - grade posted

I’ve been slowly assembling a US gold type set - sort of like the PCGS circulation strikes set, but nothing before 1834 and none of the pricey 1907’s. I’ve been stuck on the 1908 No Motto Saint for a while. It should be an easy year - a generic widget! - but I haven’t been able to find one clean and pleasant enough to match the rest of my set. When this one came up, I jumped on it.

I know these are hard to grade from photos - and it might add a bit of challenge to evaluate a 1908NM that I’m fairly confident is not from the Wells Fargo hoard. Care to guess the grade?

:) I am glad you jumped on it when you thought she is the right one.
I think she is MS65 <3 because of clean field, full fingers and nice nose and observe is very good too except the 'copper stain'?

I agree with Paradisefound on the surfaces but for a 65 you need to see luster. That image has hints of it.

I'll take a stab at AU58 or MS62 as I'm not seeing it as the others.

There are actually 3 types of 1908 Saint-Gaudens double eagles, not two.

Type 1 - 1907 obv & rev hubs with date change. (short rays, fuzzy stars)
Type 2 - New 1908 obv hub with 1907 rev. (long rays, sharp stars)
Type 3 - New 1908 obv with new, motto, 1908 rev.

Your coin is a very nice Type 2, I suspect it is AU, but would grade MS-62 or 63. But a "grade" does not matter -- it's just a great type coin. Now the challenge -- find a $5 Pratt gold of comparable quality.

I see it as an MS63, limited not by hits but by subdued luster. Overall, a nice looking coin.

    High point rub+nice clean fields=AU63+

I think it could be in a 58 holder.

Thank you all for your comments. Perhaps I should have mentioned that my type set is an Everyman ;-)

I think cameonut captured it best as a 58 shot 64. It has satiny, intense luster in hand, and minimal marks that in an MS coin would give it a shot at 65. But just a bit of shine on the knee and eagle's breast...

BTW, it's in a doily holder with a green CAC sticker - so CAC agrees it's AU, too.

BTW, one of the challenges for this coin was that my type set is all CAC-approved. But no one who gets back a 1908 No Motto in AU-58 bothers to send it to CAC. There's no real premium, with MS examples so plentiful. I was getting resigned to making one myself, when I found this one. I think the doily holder is what made it worthwhile to sticker.

There must be some faint circulation marks in the fields that are not showing up in the image. Sure looks MS and nice!

Late to the game... my first impression was 63... but I questioned "rub"... nice coin in any case...
