The credit unions in my area are more customer friendly than the big banks, many have coin counting machines for member use otherwise they charge a fee like coinstar. If you got one of your parents to help you open a savings account it could help you to not have to roll them and it might teach you the value of saving if you deposited a small percentage of the coins you turn in.

Stay away from Coinstar as its fees will eat away at your money. Find a bank or credit union with a free coin counting machine and I open an account there so you can use it (at 14 I expect it will be a free account).

Then use another bank as your pickup bank, and the one with the machine as your "dump" bank.

Hmmmm...guess it's just the times! When I was your age roll hunting I was very proficient at re rolling the coins I searched! Of course if the coins you are getting are not in paper rolls I understand...but don't become a lazy roll hunter! >:)

The paper rolls that my bank has are already sealed down one side... so it is easy to dump the coins in and then crimp the ends.... should not be a problem. Cheers, RickO

Not that hard once you get use to it.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Hand roll is far less expensive. Visit wallymart and get some paper rolls. As you view each coin put the ones you do not need/want in a roll. This way you do not have a big stockpile of coins and it makes it easier to deposit the rolls at the bank.

I recall having a coin tray as a kid. I think I found it at a flea market. Basically, you don't have to count... just stack the coins in their designated tray and the etched marks on the side of the tray "counts" the coins for you...

    BTW... Welcome to the forum!

@lkenefic That tray is pretty cool. Is it my eyes or are the .50 cent slots wider than the $1.00 slots?

Edited to add: I just realized those are modern dollars which are smaller than the Kennedy Half.

12% or hand roll? Money tight? I really think you've already answered your own question.

So if you have to use a Coinstar kiosk, there is no fee if you takes your money in an Amazon gift card. Otherwise that fee is a ripoff. Find a friendly bank.
On a similar note, I just picked up an original roll of unc.1956 Lincoln cents that I'm gonna go thru on Tuesday. Peace Roy
