A different kind of "error" found in pocket change (1909 VDB Lincoln cent)

I asked a friend if I could look through her big bag of pocket change. I came across a cent that felt different than the others - it had very high and sharp rims.
I scrutinized the coin and I was shocked to see that it was a newish 1909 VDB cent.
There is no error on the coin, but someone certainly made one heck of a mistake by spending it.

Nice. Makes you wonder the immediate history before it became “pocket change”... who broke the roll, slab, flip, stole, inheritance gone awry...
Maybe do a fingerprint trace from the obverse to find out. LOL

I saw the date first then flipped it over looking for the VDB. Then I flipped it back to the obverse hoping an S would appear. I guess I was being greedy.
Anyone know if acetone dip can remove fingerprint from copper coin?

If it is a new print.
The longer the print is on the coin the less likely that acetone alone will work. Do not clean coins. IMHO
Nice find, okay to dip in acetone for a while. Do not rub at all. Acetone shall dissolve whatever gunk it can. Acetone evaporates very quickly. The rev looks very nice. Peace Roy

Careful. You don't want to ruin the proof surfaces.
At one time wasn't it common practice for shows to do "change dumps" of coins like this into local commerce to try and drum up interest? I hate to think of someone accidentally spending nice coins like this.

1909 Lincoln cents are among the most commonly seen in circulation. They were evidently saved in large quantities - far greater than any other date - and slowly entered circulation into the 1970s.
Cool find in change.... they are out there... sometimes old change jars or hoards are liquidated...coinstar machines or just spent. Acetone will not harm the surface of the coin, it is an organic solvent and will just remove the organic residues. Finger oil is usually mildly acidic, so if not removed immediately, it will etch the surface. Cheers, RickO

A guy i saw on instagram found an 1858 flying eagle in pocket change either yesterday or the day before. A MS 09 VDB beats that out of the water IMO!
