Do you hoard coins? What types? Why?

They say coin collecting is about assembling a set of coins (type set, year/mint, theme, error coins, etc.).
In contrast, coin hoarding is about saving every attainable coin (typically of a type that is no longer made or seems scarce) with no plan of assembling it into anything and no concept of a goal or completion. Examples: wheat leafs, a box of buffalo nickels, multiples of the same variety such as a small date or “Bugs Bunny” Franklins.
I always throw a new-found wheat leaf in a box, but I have no plans for them. I just gained access to a number of silver coins, and I am fighting the urge to hang on to them even though I don’t need most of them for my sets.
Do you hoard anything? If so, what? Why do you keep coins that have no planned place in your collections?
My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

I don’t hoard anything. For example, what I am going to do with 100 1911-S Lincoln cents, or 25 of the exact same colonial coin. 💤
I would prefer to use my money and acquire a variety of other stuff that I can enjoy.

I can never pass up Columbian halves that are cheap... Purchased #500 just a few weeks ago.
Pre-1800 Large Cents, all under VG. Been hoarding them for 30 years. I must have a few hundred by now. Something about seeing '17' in the date. I just can't pass them up, as long as they have nice surfaces, and the price is right. Love these old war horses.

When I started collecting I thought quantity was the way to go, now I realize it's quality. 40+ years ago, I'd estimate that I had at least 10,000 coins that I called my collection. Now, (excluding SE's) I'd estimate my collection has shrunk by over 95% in numbers but those are now hoarded.
Do you hoard coins? Yes.
What types? Whatever comes my way.
Why? If I knew the reason then I would not hoard.
Realistically, I do not hoard but I have a tendency of getting more than one... or two...

I've come to believe that my instincts of hanging on to anything that seems scarce is to my detriment. I recently sorted through a few hundred Walking Liberties, and while that was a lot of fun, the urge to hang on to all these has no focus - How many multiples of a given date do I need? So I'm trying to convince myself to set goals and focus on collecting sets, then letting go of all those extras. Letting go of what I have is not easy for me.

You too?! I use them as fillers for my Dansco half dollar albums when the only example of a date is in a TPG holder. I may buy a blank Dansco album for halves and fill it with nice circulated Columbian half dollars.

I'm not a hoarder. But I have seen a few estate sale coin auctions where the owner clearly had hoarding tendencies. Hundreds of rolls of 90%, circ Lincolns, a dozen albums of Franklin halves, etc. I hope they brought joy to their owner.

Sometimes it hard to say no. When you collect something, its hard to say no when you come across an extra or another, because you appreciate how tough they are.
Yes-to a small degree. I have my share of colorful 1913 Variety One Buffs.

Yes, I have a problem with 1827 half dollars.
Maybe that is not hoarding. Maybe it is a set -- a set purposefully comprised of toned 1913 Variety One Buffaloes. Seems to me to be eye-appealing, impressive, and meaningfully themed.

Fortunately, most of them look like doggy-doo-doo.

I guess that could be true.
I collect coins... I have done sets and series... I now collect what attracts me. That being said, I do not sell coins... So, does that make me a hoarder? Actually, I do not give an obese rodents derriere what anyone calls me...
I just enjoy collecting coins...and will continue.

When I was "the tooth fairy" I used to accumulate vf to au Morgans, Peace dollars, and halves. Once silver got to over $30 / oz, the hoard went away...

I used to hoard 1876 3 cent nickels.
I don't recall how it started but eventually I stopped and dribbled them out a few at a time.
I did OK in the long run with them but probably could have done better with something else.
Then I went through a period of grabbing every nice coronet head 1/2 cent that was priced reasonably and had original chocolate color.
I did better with those.
And let's not bring up the 1973 Ike's......oops.....I did it again lol
I once owned more of these............last coin I could find to fill a Dansco years ago in EF -AU condition. Found that coin raw in Baltimore.........I probably have more.
_All I can add is .......don't go in or near coin collecting establishments, don't associate with known collectors.......etc.

Hoard coins? Not so much. Lots of half dollars, but I wouldn't call it a hoard. Few duplicates. And very few sacred cows... buy, sell and trade. It's a hobby.
Even my "collection" of various silver bullion isn't much of a hoard. And they hold no sentimental value: When silver hits $30/oz, I'll sell.
OTOH, I've got quite a hoard of tools. Gotta keep it all don't-ya-know.

Quarters: 2,859 pieces: including one complete set, 1896 S #33 pieces, still shooting for a full roll; 1913 S #13 pieces
Half Dollars: 2,232 pieces, including: #24 pieces: 1914 P.
So, do I hoard: yes.
