This 1973 D Penny looks like it might be Silver/ Steel or Aluminum? - This 1991 D Dime looks like a penny and was found in a penny roll.

    Both coins were probably buried for many years, though it is possible the 1973-D cent was in a fire. They are just damaged coins, not "errors".

    I think what you need is a scale to weigh them. If it is the correct weight for the type of coin then you know that you have nothing but beat up pocket change. A dime struck on a copper planchet is not going to have the same weight as one struck on the correct planchet. To take it further if it was missing the clad layers then it would be grossly under weight of what it should be. The ones you have posted here are damaged from being in the ground. By the way you can buy a digital scale pretty cheap for under $20 and they are pretty accurate.

    Both have worn rims that show the correct color. Both have heavily damaged surfaces. As for the cent, aluminum would be noticeably lighter and steel would stick to a magnet.

    It seems that you find an average of at least one "error" every day. If errors were that common, they wouldn't be worth looking for. :p

    Definitely PMD coins... Likely they both spent considerable time in the ground and were found by people with metal detectors. I have found cents and dimes that look just like those pictured. Chemicals such as fertilizers and weed killers (not to mention all the random pollution) can have strange effects on coins... and the modern coinage (especially zinc cents) is particularly susceptible to such damage.
