Mercury Dime on Great Collections Goes a Little Crazy

Now that this auction is over, I feel safe posting this. I bid on this coin, but was blown out of the water. Aside from the color, what in the world made this one go crazy? Hammer with the juice, $230

Don't know. It's pretty, but in the wrong holder. And from I could tell it is not a variety. A 50 buck coin to me if it was in a PCGS holder.

The holder is a classic one and I know some placed premium over it..... come to think of it @asheland just acquired one just for this soap type fatty holder
According to their site, the last 4 coins in NGC and PCGS plastic sold for $50-80 with a high outlier (PCGS/CAC at $150)
I was wondering if it was a variety, but if you say no, then congrats to the seller!

I cannot tell from the posted pics, but perhaps the winning bidder and the under bidder might think the coin has Full Bands?

Or it could just be that some people got carried away bidding.
It would be interesting to know, but it seems like we can only speculate at the moment.
That one was on my watch list. Last night it was reasonable, but when I checked it again today before the auction closed, I walked away from it. As @DIMEMAN said, it was not a variety. I'm thinking 2 people went after it thinking it has upgrade potential as @EagleEye stated.
Hoping for a 68 crackout? Maybe someone felt the risk was worth it for a 5 figure payout. Or they were mesmerized by the toning, which to me is kind of on the mildew side.

Maybe two "nuclear" bids ran into each other. Nice coin, but not that nice.

That much for a 42-S ... no comment.
Yours truly put a 1942-S dime in a $.05 cardboard 2x2 last evening, Coin is a sharp lustrous AU that came from the hoard my brother bought awhile back. Estimated value, $5.
Note: mr1874 is notorious for over-estimating value of his coins.
If a picture wasn't going very well I'd put a puppy dog in it, always a mongrel, you know, never one of the full bred puppies. And then I'd put a bandage on its foot... I liked it when I did it, but now I'm sick of it.

My '42-S AU has almost 1/4 bands, 1/8 on each side,with 3/4 of the split gone on the rest of the band.
My 1942-D, however, has full bands and I've been calling it AU, too. Maybe I will start calling my '42-D that came out of the hoard an UNC.
My '42-S and '42-D Mercs are part of my compensation package for dealing with inventorying, and conserving where necessary, the coins in the hoard my brother bought.
