Ugly tone Franklin

privatecoinprivatecoin Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭✭✭

While i do find toned coins attractive, this recent addition to my collection goes down as quite ugly. It does fill a slot in my collection though. B)

I tried just "filling holes" when I was putting together my proof IHC set, but I was left with a nagging dissatisfaction in those coins - and getting out of them to add a better example actually took more patience (not to mention a eye-opening financial hit) than just being patient in the search.

Now if your goal is to put together a fugly Franklin set, well, sir, you're a winner! :)

    I love it!

All that matters is that you like it and it fills a slot. It's a cute coin though for sure! B)

Fugglies are hard to get rid of if you want to move on to something else. As they say, " patience is a virtue".

The true view makes it sort of interesting and... better than original pics, no offense.

Now that is one UUUUUgly Franklin .... However, I am not a fan of tarnish as you may have heard... that one looks as if it spent some time in a cuspidor ;) Cheers, RickO

Do you think that Franklin was dirty when it was slabbed? Do I see a latent print over the date? Peace Roy

I have a few toned like yours which most people find very unattractive.

I typically do not find toning unattractive, but your coin is on the ugly side without much luster for a MS 65.

I always wonder how the grading companies can determine the grade when there is this much dark toning.

It certainly "stood" out to me when I saw it, and it is graded higher than what I had. I made a few offers that were declined, but they sold on my 3rd offer for it. Ugly or not it is interesting to look at and it fits well in my collection for a long time to be.

Nothing wrong with that coin. Originality . Probably from a double mint set.

Poor Ben was never the good looking sort. Maybe that's why his common-law wife married another man while he was away in Europe?

The 1953-S in the OP almost definitely began life in a double US mint set and while I adore attractively toned coins, I have to admit that this is one I would not buy, sell or take on consignment.

Looks like Ben is wearing a racoon cap... kind of. That’s pretty nice.

As mentioned above, the '53-S almost certainly started life in a double mint set. FWIW, I would also suspect the fingerprint on the obverse also started at this point in time.

Most people seem to think that mint set toning means attractively toned. This is not the case. In MOST cases mint set toning is mediocre to ugly. In this case I'd say the toning is mediocre, but the coin certainly seems solid for an MS65. FWIW, I've found that PCGS tends to grade MS darker toned Franklins down one technical point for the darker toning.

If you're looking for someone to agree, you got it :) Of course, I find all toning ugly, to varying degrees. As I've said before, I think the grading services should go ahead and grade toned coins, but they should also label them as environmentally damaged.

Still can't get over that avatar but you sir/mam are certainly spot on when it comes to toned coins.

The 1955 Mint Set Frankies have to be the fugliest ones of all. This one was a PCGS 64FBL that I sold for the princely sum of $15.50:

I don't have images, but I once owned an MS64 silver Washington quarter (1954-D, perhaps?) that had the most profoundly ugly toning I have ever seen. The coin was remarkably clean of hits and marks, but had little luster left and the toning was putrid. I put it up on ebay starting at one cent with free shipping and titled it something like "the most ugly Washington quarter in existence". I also told folks that I didn't want it returned, so if they bought it and didn't like it I would simply refund them and let them keep the coin. It sold for something like $5.50.

Does anyone have pictures of Tomaska's MS68 Franklin? That coin was in a league of its own and not in a good way.
