Considering the grade, I don't mind the counter stamp, but don't like that it's been cleaned.

    Wonder what the 53 represents.

Maybe an early and misguided attempt at TPG.

    You beat me to it.

I think you missed the decimal! It's graded 5.3, (in the new enhanced grading scale). Just better than Good! :)

Agree. I'd grade it in the XF range. It has succumbed to a major scrub down and may have some PVC, as well.

I think if you look close that it is a #33 I think that it is for "Old Latrobe #33 Rolling Rock" or someone had a clock number or maybe they used it as a hat check back in the day if coins could only talk!

So 1929 plus 53 equals 1982. Just thought I'd share that little fact. Yeah I can do addition. Peace Roy

53 stands for the value at the time it was stamped.

Looking closely at the stamp... it is a 33....Maybe it was a pocket piece started when the owner was 33 years old.... IDK.... Cheers, RickO

The numbers are too far apart to be one number, so maybe the 3 on the right was the second attempt. My guess is that it was used in a metal detecting event like catching tagged fish.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 9,849 ✭✭✭✭✭

However, one problem with that theory is the style font may predate metal detectors by 3 or 4 decades.

You're right it is 33. Do we know what font style that is, maybe a clue? I think the large size means that it must be easily seen in commerce. Peace Roy
