What's going on with this?

Pulled this from circulation and thought someone here could tell me what's going on with this? It seems to be a 1981-D, weighs 4.96 grams and is slightly smaller than a normal nickel. It appears that somehow a thin layer of metal has folded over the lettering of both the obverse and reverse rim causing a lamination. This is seen mainly on the obverse. Also has a unusually high rims. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

    I've seen this type of damage when a coin finds its way into a piece of revolving equipment such as a cloths drier. It's not likely that someone would choose to spoon a nickel rather than a larger coin but I guess it's possible. Normally a coin is spooned to make a ring.

    The incarcerated have plenty of time for this. Once found a cent with a Memorial on both sides. It had been planed down and sandwiched with solder. Found with my change in a town near a prison.

    It does look like it has been spooned... Definitely PMD....It likely has been caused by some other method than spooning... silver is softer and much easier to work with. Cheers, RickO

    Thanks for the info! I kept looking at this and wondering what could have happened here? Now I know I have an extra nickel to spend!
