Question about collection albums

I am trying to complete an album of mercury dimes. My question, should I replace the old school album with a better one or keep the old one, it is falling apart, I'm not sure if it would decrease the value or not.

If it's really an older paper based album it may (probably does) have a high sulfur/chemical content. Unless you like artificially toned coins, swap it out.

An album does not add much tontesale in my experience, except with Dansco albums. I would suggest a used dansco.
Edit to specify dansco books with slides, to view both sides as @jafo50 says.

If you're using the typical blue Whitman album you can only see one side of the coin and sometimes the coins fall out of the album. I like the albums that have removable plastic sleeves so you can see both sides of the coin while it's in the album.

Listen to CCGGG... those older albums will not be kind to 90% silver in the long run. Invest in a $22 Dansco album. It's money well spent.

Also, are you going to acquire the 16D or the overdates? If so, this is one instance where I'd leave the coin in its plastic. 1916D Merc dimes are among the more counterfeited coins. Having that proof of authenticity is a very good thing.

I've been contemplating that question about various old albums I have.

For myself, I am migrating all my boyhood sets to Dansco albums and building upon them from there. I can view the coins from both sides, they are protected, yet (and this is important to me) the set retains the "book" look with a matrix of coins per page. I put a good amount of time into these sets, and I'm going to invest in the best album - a small investment compared to the set and my time.

I do keep "reserved" coins of each set, and these I've been putting into 2x2s and display those in vinyl pages.

For a few sets, for "historical" or "sentimental" reasons, I am leaving them in their folders. In particular, I just inherited my dad's Mercury dime collection which he assembled 50+ years ago. To me, this album is an heirloom for me to remember him and to pass on to the next generation. In this rare scenario, I currently feel I should leave those coins in the album he handled. If the book starts to become ragged or somewhat destructive to the coins, I will transfer them (perhaps to a Dansco).

So unless that album itself has sentimental value, I would upgrade. Any set worth your time to assemble is worthy of a Dansco album.

Yup, that old paper album is brutal on coins. Nasty stuff migrating from the paper on to the coins. Peace Roy

The proper answer would depend on the grades of the dimes?

The grades range, however it is my opinion that a majority of them are in MS condition. I bought the nice album

I like Capital holders. They are an odd shape, but the display is 'single page'. Suited to smaller coins, too.
