Amazing. Being the crazy person I am, I took a metal detecting wand to a couple of grocery stores when the promotion was on. I went late in the evening and scanned the cheerios boxes. Didn't find any.
I still have nightmares about the amount of cheerios I ate back then.
Yes, this coin was well known for circulating only between the John Fenwick and Clara Barton rest stops on the New Jersey Turnpike. It didn't work in any of the vending machines, so was relatively well preserved.

General Mills received two shipments from the mint , for their promotion in 1999.
While 5500 is the total amount of Cheerios dollars the mint reported and is reported in the red book, I have a theory,
I'm thinking the first shipment contained variety 1 (boldly detailed tail feather) specimens. And a small number , just to appease the first million boxes.(say 500). Keep in mind there were ten million cents given away. I'm sure lots of people got their Cent. But to get o e dollar, there was one with a Cent in every 20,000 boxes.
And we also know from history that many of the blister packed coins did not contain the boldly detailed feather specimens.
With respect to that , one lucky fella not only got two , eating cereal.... but found one in a roll, 20 years later.
My point is: there are still fewer than 100 known. If we ever approach 500 found, I might rethink this.

I did get two Cheerios cents back in the day. I wish someone would identify a different variety among those. Maybe an extra whiskers Abe or a super fantastic bowtie.

Fascinating story. Cliff Long should be known as the Cheerio Dollar Man!!!!! So if the tail feathers on the reverse is different on this cereal variety, was there a difference on the cent? Seems like I had one of the cents years ago but don't think I held on to it.
I did a big flea market this morning. Looked thru lots of stuff but no luck, no cheerios guys. The hunt continues. Peace Roy

No differences on the cent. It was an established design that was not still being tweaked.
