Late Silver Dollar Show Report

I left home very early Thursday morning for the long drive to St. Charles, Missouri for the Silver Dollar Show. It rained all day and it was a miserable drive. I arrived, in the area ,about two hours before dark.

Friday after a quick breakfast ( bacon ) at the hotel I drove to the St. Charles Convention Center at the Embassy Suites Hotel. It is a very nice facility with plenty of free parking. The show started on Thursday but I could not be there until Friday. I quickly got my badge and waited 10 minutes for the show to open. There were about 20 of us waiting to go in at 10 AM.

At the entrance to the show there was a booth selling replacement windows! Inside the show there was a booth for Bath Fitter and a booth for a Chiropractor! I heard one dealer say " What were they thinking trying to sell bath tubs at a coin show ? ". Very strange.

As I moved around the show I saw that there were 4 booths that were sold but the dealers had not showed. This seems to be a problem at this show more so than any other show.

I have been to 250-300 shows over the years. This was the deadest show that I have ever attended.

I soon saw a Large Cent that I needed. It was in a PCGS holder in the grade that I wanted. The price was ok but it would be, by far,the highest price that I have ever paid for a coin! There was another guy behind me waiting to see the same coin. I would have to think about the coin.

Just for Ricko here are a few bullion prices. 10 ounce silver bars for spot + $2, one ounce bars $15.50, $10 face in Mercury Dimes at $110, cull Peace Dollars $15, common Peace Dollars $17, pre-1921 Morgan Dollars vg-vf $22. PCGS Morgan Dollars 63 at $48, 64 at $60 and 65 at $105.

One dealer had a 1926 Sesquicentennial $2.50 in PCGS 64 with very nice color. It was not something that I needed.

The concession stand had a Friday special of a hot ham and cheese sandwich and fries for $8.50. Not a bad price for convention center food.

I went back to take another look at the Large Cent. I am still thinking about it. After a few hours I left the show without buying anything. I drove a couple of hours to visit with my Aunt ( 98 ) and several cousins.

I headed home on Sunday, again in rain, and arrived at dark. I had a nice weekend playing with coins and getting to visit with relatives.

Thanks for the report. I love it when a coin show journey involves other activities. Even more special when you can visit a loved one! :)

Thanks for your report. Sorry you couldn't pull the trigger on anything but if there is anything better than a nice Morgan it would be a plate of well done bacon.

Thanks for the report.... and the special section on bullion ;) One further question, did the bullion seem to be selling? Or stagnant? Thanks again, Cheers, RickO

Nice report, I thought the show was a little dead too. I was set up there and noticed that the traffic was lighter than last year, and it did affect my sales. I thought the outside non coin vendors was kind of funny and a just a little tacky.

I didn't go, but what was the Large Cent and how much did they want for it? I would've probably been in the line to look at it too. :)

Nice report. Sorry you had no luck picking anything up. I've had more shows like that than not, but I've never regretted attending a show as I love looking at coins in person.

    Thanks or sharing.
