My coin package got stuck in an USPS endless loop

davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,635 ✭✭✭✭✭

A couple years ago, I had something similar and the 'target' office put in another envelope and hand addressed it. This one started in California and being shipping to Washington.... have you had anything similar?

My guess would be that someone misprinted the little sorting bar code on it and is stuck in a loop going through machines until someone figures it out and uses a sharpie to mark out the sorting code.

If that happened to me I'd be a basket case. Especially if a high value package.

Seems like there oughtta be a way to eliminate do loops.

Yeah I have had that happen a couple of times...got sorted out eventually and luckily the recipient was understanding which took away some of the anxiety.

    Second thought on this.
I send/receive many more packages via FedEx and UPS vs USPS. I cannot think of a single instance where the competitors package got stuck in a do loop. In fact, I have had only one instance of non-delivery in three years.

Sounds like the USPS has some work to do to get competitive.

I have the same issue with my package which I sent out on October 4 but until today, it is still going around from CA to NJ (one location to the next and end up at NJ distribution center), NJ to WA, WA to Nevada, Nevada back to NJ. I stopped by the post office yesterday to show them the transition list generated from my tracking number but PO clerk said there is nothing they can do except I have to wait for the package to arrive at the destination which who knows when :). It is unbelievable that a nicely printed out label from eBay with visible bar code can be in such a mess.

  • Happened to my package too, finally received it after 2 weeks or so, it turned out to have wrong zip code.

I hope you have an understanding buyer - I could see this ending bad for you with eBay's rules.

I recently had a package I mailed "in transit to next facility".
It has been that way since Oct. 2.
My buyer has been very understanding (not) even though he is whole.
My post office told me unofficially that the contents of an entire truck went poof. (Apparently still "in transit to next facility.")
The post office email response to my missing package inquiry said they do their best but sometimes yada yada yada Charlie Brown's parent's voice....

My wife had a similar experience with a package.... not nearly as bad as the OP, but frustrating just the same...Cheers, RickO

My lost coin package from last month also got improperly sorted somewhere in Massachusetts. Next thing you know, they'll send it to Shandaken, NY, where it will sit for 3 days until the contents of the box are finally sucked dry by the giant spider that allegedly lives in their post office. You should receive your empty box some time next month. :o

I had a package from the lower 48 go out to American Somoa before making its way to me in AK, if that counts

tracking placed it in Seattle last night and my local PO this morning - something should arrive soon.

    Disagree....strongly

UPS messes up my packages ALL the time. I asked for a hold and they sent it out once. When I called and said, you were supposed to hold it but it's not there, the customer service rep said, "I'm not surprised."

Just three weeks ago, UPS DELIVERED to Barnes & Noble my SIGNATURE REQUIRED U.S. Mint package which I had requested to be held. Then, they told the B&N shipping clerk to give it to me when I showed up...still without signature.

The reason they probably never have a "do loop" - if that's even true - is that you can't just hand address a UPS package and drop it in a mail slot.

Did you file a "Locate Mail" request? They almost always find it and reroute it in a matter of a couple days. Now, I've never tried it with a package that is still moving, but they do seem to always be able to find them when they actually are forced to look.

I sent a package of books to Colorado, media mail.

    It vanished into thin air.

18 months later I got a note that it had arrived.

Came back to me in 5 days.

Good feedback. I have never had a problem and watch tracking of Fedex and UPS packages all the time. Sometimes it appears that a package is off track, but it always gets to me when predicted unless there is a weather issue. I can understand that others may have issues. I have not.

It's good to know that all seem to have their problems.

As an aside, I guess I'm glad that disagree button is gone. I'd have snagged another disagree for that comment.

Very, very frustrating, but I still think my package mailed from Boston to Rochester mis-routed to Puerto Rico right before the hurricane tops it.

Yes I did file the "locate mail" request about 10 days ago but I have not received any reply from the Post Office, not in the mail as well as email. I should check my USPS account to see if they provide any update.

As of this morning, my package is somewhere in AZ (per tracking status update). It is so close but yet so far away ... :)

Still pondering when I will be getting it back. Mean while, I can't wait to watch the Rams vs New Orleans football game this afternoon.

My first class usps package has been in a mystery loop for two weeks now, the bummer is that it was a cherry picked Variety worth 2x to 5x purchase price :s

    Update as of 3-4-2019
    My package never arrived.
Can a person recall a first class package?

  • USPS has been having quite a few issues lately, and the Christmas season isn't even upon us yet. Had this one a couple weeks ago. Normally, when it gets to Springfield MA, it is delivered in NH the next day. This package took a scenic detour to CT and NJ before finally going back to Springfield, then to NH.

Not sure where this package was for nine days, Trying to get a competent live person on the phone either at the 800 number or the Salinas post office was impossible. Finally was able to get someone at a neighboring post office in Salinas to answer their phone and confirm that I was dialing the correct number. The lady just said that the phone number was correct, but nobody ever answers the phone there. When the package finally arrived, I was expecting it to show up in a body bag, but it was in perfect condition at least.

Hi all. Not a coin collector, but a watch collector here. :) I just joined to share my USPS endless loop story though.

I ordered 2 cheap watches from Singapore which arrived in NY in just 4 days. After passing customs, the package made its way to Indianapolis, Indiana where it got stuck in the postal black hole. It bounced back and forth between Indianapolis, IN and Terre Haute, IN for a few days before I noticed.

I filed a missing mail report but that had no effect. So, I had to call the 1-800 number and wait on hold for about an hour. The lady made a case on the matter and gave me a case number and said someone would intercept my package and send it to my house.

Next, I noticed it went to Muncie, IN so I was hopeful that it had been corrected. But then it went back to Indianapolis... then to Terre Haute again... Then it went to Columbus, IN, so I was still hopeful. Then it went back to Indianapolis again! OMG. Then it just kept looping again: Indianapolis to Terre Haute.

After it had been looping around IN for weeks, I called again and told them. They said that someone wrote on my first case that I had complained and called someone unprofessional which I have no idea what they are talking about. Since I never said any of that or complained really. I was frustrated and a bit annoyed, but mostly amused. lol She also claimed that they were unable to help since they didn't have the tracking number, but I did give it to them. So the second lady corrected that and said I never complained. Then she made a new case and got all of my info. Yet after that, my package just kept on looping between Indianapolis and Terre Haute.

Finally I called my local post office that my mail runs through and was able to coax them into helping me. They kept telling me to "make a case" yet I already had one. So, after giving them my case number they were able to get in and reroute my package.

None of this makes any logical sense considering that they could easily write a computer code to recognize these loops, and my address was clearly written on the package. My zip code was correct. My address was correct and they knew where to send the package. The return address was correct too. I have no idea why this happened and how nothing or no one noticed, and why they don't have any measures in place to prevent/correct this type of thing.

Singapore to NY in just 4 days; about 18 days to get through Indiana...

Here is the insane tracking history - in spoiler tags below. Luckily, no watches were harmed in the making of this disaster. :)

(In other news, I had a package that I mailed that got stuck in a city in Montana for a week. I filed a missing mail report and they apparently found the package and sent it to its destination within 2 or 3 days. But then, a month later, they sent me an email saying they were working hard to find my package still... when, if they would just look at their tracking they would see it had already been delivered... I am unable to tell them to stop looking since the email comes from a no reply server and they make it hard to contact anyone. /shrug Zero sense at work here.)

    Davewesen,
I ended up refunding full amount to the buyer. I filed a complaint with ebay but don’t remember whether I got a refund credit for seller fee charged by ebay.
After receiving 2 notifications from Post Office stating that they would search for my package, the third email notification concluded that the package could no longer be found and Post Office had decided to close my case regardless of what I think or feel.

  • I had another package get stuck in the same Indiana loop after this one. It came from Singapore, arrived in California, then went to Florida. I live in Georgia, but then it went to Indiana!!! OMG!!!

Had to call again and get it redirected.

But then I finally figured it out... the seller was putting my phone number on my packages. So, it looks like the packages are scanned automatically, and the computer simply looks for the last line in the address, then takes only the first five numbers of the last line, which, for my phone number, is a valid zip code in Indiana.

So I go to the website where I ordered (AliExpress) and tried to delete my phone number, but they "require" a phone number be on your account as mandatory. So, I changed my phone number to my zip code, which was accepted, even with only 5 numbers. But I still worried because then it shows the +1 for international code, so I worried they might add that 1 before the number and mess it all up again.

I recently placed another order with them and asked the individual sellers not to put my phone number on the package, but they keep asking me what my phone number is... which is irrelevant if you are going to omit it anyhow. One seller said they were afraid that the post office would not have a way to contact me if they omit my phone number... what?!

I said, "Why would they need to contact me? No one in America EVER puts phone numbers on mail." (After some googling. I guess there might be a quibble, here? Someone insists that UPS and FedEx require phone numbers on the shipping label but I don't remember ever seeing that and I just checked on of my packages from Amazon and there is no phone number on it, but it is USPS, of course. But there definitely seems to be an issue if you put it in the end of the actual address line.

So, no telling where my next package will go. And I have not been able to even contact any human that works for the actual site, only the individual sellers.

My package was in a loop for 2 weeks, turned out the zip code was incorrect.
