The restoration of RogerB and PerryHall’s content

Hello all,
I am happy to say I was able to find a way to restore the content of both @RogerB and @PerryHall. To reiterate, the deletion was a misstep and is NOT part of the normal banning process.
Both accounts have also been unbanned.
Happy Sunday

Thank you Heather, this is good news. I appreciate your efforts at maintaining the forum. It is certainly understandable that some errors may occur. Cheers, RickO
Thank you for understanding and keeping this community alive @HeatherBoyd
One more question on behalf of @RogerB. Would it be possible to merge his posts from his previous account, @RWB, which is currently banned? It would be great to merge them as his older posts have value too and reviving those threads now may seem awkward if his previous, currently banned, account resurfaced.
Great news! I'd prefer free gold, but this news is pretty good, too.
well let's hope we have no more issues and we now can focus on coins

A wise decision. Probably not easy and probably a technical nightmare, but still a wise move.

Now we just need to coax @Paradisefound to come back...

SUGGESTION:
Instead of banning anyone at any time for what some might view as a minor infraction (or an infraction where they were baited by someone). How about this forum consider instituting something called "Probation" where violators are simply locked from posting for 2 weeks (or something) as a slap on the wrist. Then unlocked after that probationary period. Maybe if you get a certain number of probations in a certain period (maybe 3 probations in 3 months) then you are banned.
Every 3 months your probation running total is wiped clean, reset to 0.
Another idea i had is anyone with 4 stars or above could PM the mods with a "Watch" tag for any poster. The mods could then watch that person for violations. I am SURE that at least 20 (maybe more) of the regular posters would have complained about the instigator in the recent huge banning. It was clear to me weeks before the big banning happened that the poster in question should be banned. That one person was causing all the drama and issues. I even sent a message to the mods about that one posters' bad behavior weeks before things hit the fan. If that poster had been banned at that time that I had PM'd the mods, that huge multi-member banning fiasco never would have happened weeks later.
I also think that certain posters who have built up reputations (maybe based on the number of stars? or number of posts or agrees? or some combination there-of) should get a bit more latitude -- with perhaps a written warning from the mod before they get a probation.
I hate to see high contributors thrown out with the bathwater when what this forum may in most cases really need to do is get rid of a single poster. This forum cannot afford to lose their knowledgeable and high profile contributors.
Honestly in that last huge multi-member purge it was based on just a single poster with behavior issues. Only that single person needed to be banned and that whole issue would have resolved. This (in my humble opinion) was a case (I think) of the moderator not following what was actually happening closely enough in real time. I think it's hard to just occasionally check in and get a sense of the history and day to day dynamics. I think by the time the mod stepped in and studied it --- things had degenerated to the point where it looked worse for a lot of regulars than it really was (out of frustration).
Its similar to a case where there is a kid in a neighborhood spray painting and defacing cars, The citizens call the police but nothing is done. Weeks go by. Frustration builds. Eventually group of neighbors form and try to catch and punish the perpetrator themselves, then the police show up and arrest everyone. Everyone is thrown jail, but it was all about 1 guy that started it.

I agree with you on all of these points! It is why I volunteered to moderate the forums. I think that this community has a lot of positives and a lot of potential but absent moderation followed by mass unexplained bans was not productive. There are a number of posters who have also received simple warnings from me. I am working on encouraging the other moderators to do the same. Change is hard, but the forum will be better in the long run with more stability.

Thank you Heather, for being kind enough to sort the issue out. I know it must be a pain. And thank you for hearing our suggestions for making this forum better than it was before.

Great to hear Heather. Always keep an open mind and stay flexible on how to best move forward. Recently i saw a thread titled "I'm out of here" or something where a few more people said they were leaving (I think because more and post threads are being "locked" as too controversial or having run their course.
Things seem to be at a tipping point right now. I totally agree it's a fine line to skate: Moderate enough to get rid of "troublemakers" "trolls" etc ... but not so much as to stifle discussion or freedom of thought. To be honest with you, the most fun I've had on here is when a great rousing discussion (that sometimes continues for 10 to 20 pages) where people are freely chiming in gets going. This last thing is the THRILL of this forum (IMHO).
A short 5 post thread (totally related to coins) that is quickly locked (due to some rule), pours a bucket of water on things. I agree about being respectful, not cursing, playing nice etc. but dont be too quick to over-moderate. I think the way this forum worked years ago was great but it seems (to me at least) to be on the downslide right now (and I am starting to lose optimism about saving it). Can it be saved? I hope so. I think the coin hobby needs this forum to help it survive (JMHO) longer term. Maybe poofing offending posts rather than whole threads ?? Esp. if the thread is interesting and causing a great discussion. Just some food for thought. I do realize you have a hard job, but I also feel like this forum might be teetering in the balance right now.
For most of us, coins are a hobby and supposed to be fun and a stress reliever. I know for me the past few months have been much more on the stressful side here. Its one reason why I post and comment about 75% less than I would otherwise be inclined. Thanks for continuing to give this careful consideration.

If a member is on deck for banning, a simple survey is posted, Ban or No Ban. 5 star members can vote and
if necessary, execution is carried out immediately.
THIS!!!
Whatever the number is, this one post of yours may break the all-time CU record for "likes' received for a single post.
Well done moderator! Thank you for listening and caring enough to rethink and respond.

This is very good news, Heather.
I also, and sincerely, hope you won't have to expend too much time and psychic energy babysitting us hereafter.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
There was an interesting study I read once showing that people in a parking garage were much more likely to throw trash from their car on the ground when trash was already visible in the garage.
Pretty sure the same thing is true of message boards. So Its good to have a moderator.
I’m glad they are back and I also hope we can find a better way other than the banning.
I see some pretty good ideas already put forth.
Thank you Heather and I really appreciate your listening and responding to member concerns. It does not go unnoticed that you VOLUNTEERED for this additional responsibility. I hope forum members will keep that in mind as well as that PCGS maintains this forum for free for us to use.
Have a lovely Sunday,

Wow! My respect for the newb just increased exponentially!
Great news. Restoring the content is hugely important.
My involvement in the hobby is due in no small part to this forum. If it implodes or goes away, I suppose I’ll still collect on some level, but it will be to a much smaller degree.
I though you got banned too.....
Is it a badge of courage to get banned then reinstated ?
No.

Thank you Heather. I do not envy you. Please be patient with us. The best grading service needs the best forum and some of the best and most experienced people in numismatics post here and they can be grumpy and opinionated at times. They have "taken me to the woodshed" more than once, but I am a big boy and learn from the experience. Let's work together to keep this the best forum in numismatics. Thank you again.
I haven't been here for a while so I missed the hype. I understand the rules though and would like a link to these bannable offenses if possible.
See Posting Rules. It is the third one down on the US Coins forum home page marked CLOSED in RED.
The board I administer has the ability to temporarily ban someone for a fixed amount of time or until some date, so I imagine this one does, too. You need a "This User is in Time-out" icon to go with their accounts.

Dear Ms. Boyd,
Thank you for reviewing the situation and handling it promptly. Messages from several members indicate special appreciation to you in making it possible to access the large number of historical documents and discussions I had previously posted for member enjoyment.
Given my research work demands, I will generally concentrate on posting similar documents and related commentary for all to read.
As the late collector and Secretary of the Treasury, William H. Woodin, remarked, "...I could not get all collectors to agree on anything. They are a very peculiar class of people as a rule..." so possibly a bit of advance communication will be helpful.
Roger
Really, really, really, enjoy this forum.
Roger, look forward to more of your mint history/documents posts, they are quite interesting.

just posting for the free gold!
These reinstatements is the best news I've seen for days.
To wake up and discover that @RogerB , @PerryHall , @afford , et al had disappeared without a trace was very disturbing to me on many levels.
If the recovery of any of these members history has caused any expense, I also would happily contribute $50 as others have offered. Please let me know.
I've read, appreciate and understand all of the admins warnings and advice.
