USMint: A gold "golden" dollar

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,790 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just got an online survey from the mint.

Part of it is them asking likelihood of purchase if they did a 24k 20th anniversary of the "native American dollar".

"Here is some additional detail on one possible configuration of the 24K gold coin that would be issued to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Native American $1 Coin.
The 24K gold anniversary coin would be 1⁄2 Troy ounce in weight (this would be the only weight/size in which the coin is issued). It would feature the classic Sacagawea obverse (front) design, but displaying dual dates (i.e., "2000-2020"). The reverse (back) design would be a new design (yet to be determined) befitting of the Native American $1 Coin Program. It would be produced with a High Relief finish.* Other details are summarized below.

Composition: 24K gold
Obverse Design: Classic Sacagawea design, but displaying dual dates (i.e., "2000-2020")

Reverse: TBD"

Possible price: $820-$920

Or, 1/4 oz....

Prefer: Proof finish? High relief?

They then go on to ask about a "special silver medal" called "Morgan and Peace Silver Medal"....

Possibly with limited mintage....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Sounds interesting.

    Maybe....

I was at one of their "in person" survey groups when they were asking about making gold anniversary designs of the mercury dime and walking liberty half dollar (and, there was a 3rd item, but I forget what it was now).

They seem to take some good ideas and muck things up.

I like Sackies! Reminiscent of the Goodacre Sac days. Gold is interesting, but dang expensive. Maybe a 1/4 oz piece that more affordable? A silver version would be good too.

Very high risk of creating a scammer's dream !

Dual dates, new reverse, high relief would do nothing to separate these from a gold plated dollar coin. Crooks will pull out old "Golden Dollar" PR materials and rake in the profits before anyone does anything to stop them.

A Gold Coin doesn't seem very radical at all, just expensive. 😣

Now if they put it out in Rhodium, that would be totally rad. Even a special release in Silver would be ground shaking. 😌

Yeah, this was discussed back in September. It looks like they're serious...

Coin World reports possible 2019 Gold (not golden) Sacabuck plus other 2019 US Mint products...

Maybe so, but they appear to be moving forward, judging from past experience with the USMint and their surveys; that I have been involved with.

Also I didn't see, in the other thread, mention of the Morgan and Peace Silver Medal...nor a few other, more minor (to me) things that the survey mentioned that I didn't type up....as it was dinner time and I was hurrying to go eat :)

Why not auction off the 2000-W gold Sacs that were minted earlier?

Love the original Sac design and would LOVE to see a 24k option available.

Actually, I'm about at the point with new mint products where the redos are things, unless I flip them, I don't do.
Even if in a different metal, it just doesn't interest me. I thought it would, when I did the survey for the gold merc (about 2+ years ago I think is when I did the survey), but by the time it came out, the mint had worn me out.

I'm sure they'll make them, though. Mintage will be up in the air (that was also one of the questions....if mintage limit would affect the decision.....and how many would I look at purchasing as well as how likely I would be to even make that purchase).

Although I would like one, I see this as flipper material - which makes it not appeal to me. I wish the mint would strike coins for a proscribed order period and limit the number per order and thus simply give true collectors a shot as well as letting the flippers "Party like it's 1999", but to limited extent then no doubt.

    Well, just Love coins, period.

I received - and responded - to the same survey. It was interesting, though I do not have much interest in the mentioned products.... Maybe the Morgan/Peace - but they indicated it would not be a coin, rather a medal, so probably not for me. I like the fact that they query the collecting public, however, they do not ask for ideas, they just present their already watered down selections....There really could be a market for Mint products....but they are a bureaucracy - mired down in all the negative points that such a label carries. A creative leadership could make them a very profitable business. Cheers, RickO

The Mint is doing some cool things these days. That said, I rarely buy directly from the Mint. Too expensive! If I'm interested in something (which is rare) I usually can pick it up much cheaper on eBay, a few months down the line.

What is the history and interest in a gold version of something nobody sees and many don't even know exists? Another non-spendable "medal" the average person can't afford. Can't see it being a winner. More like a weiner.

I'd still rather see a silver trime and half dime.

Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc

They have been doing this, for example the WW I medals earlier this year.
