While I was away...........

I see there has been some changes that may help avoid getting involved in a kerfluffle in the future. Thanks to all who called out to bring us banned ones back into the fold. We all appreciate it.

But I have also been active with the Everyman Barber Quarter Registry Set. I am creeping up on spot 10 - watch out! I figure over time I can probably move up to around 8, whether I go farther than that will depend on how much I want to spend, or not. So here are 4 recent additions that I imaged in my spare time last week. To see my complete set of images, clink on the link below and do a slide show with my gallery.

My primary goal is to have at least all of the New Orleans BQ's, one set in 20-45, and one set in 58. Of course in a perfect world they will all be CAC. Then I build out from there, preferably in grades 25-45 where possible, and in 58. Recent pick ups shown below include 3 O's and one P. I think the P will bean. I don't think the unbeaned O will. It does not have a look that my experience tells me CAC likes but you just never know. But still a nice coin and I like it.

Perhaps the star of this group is the 1909-O, possibly the toughest date for the O Mint. PCGS has 532 grading records (20 in VF20) and NGC has 125 (1 in VF20). So you think it should not be that hard to find with nice surfaces. But apparently it is, even in lowly VF20 it is an expensive coin and should be sent into CAC. Yet, only 41 green beans are affixed to 1909-O quarter slabs, and 1 gold bean in AU55. Only 4 in VF20 and 11 in higher grades. So when you see one with great surfaces that already has a bean, time to get one I say. I will be looking for a higher grade one as well if the right one comes along.

    In David Lawrence's guide to Barber Quarters, the image for the 1893-O has the same MM placement, DL says there are at least 5 MM placements and this one if the farthest to the right.

    Wow those are fantastic. Glad your back. I never really payed attention to the placement of the mint mark on the reverse until looking at these. Great set.

    FYI I sold the 1909-O Gold CAC AU55 (with the assistance of my friend MFH) in 2011. It was later regraded to AU58.

    The MM to the right is considered common, three MM positions to the Right, the center MM is, per David Lawrence, an R-4.
    Center MM is the scarcest, like the 1897 S, center MM.

    This is a spectacular coin and even more so because it is the key for the O Mint in this series. If I ever come a across it, I will do my best to acquire it. Thanks for posting.

    The most interest is in the 1897 S centered MM, only specialists are interested in the others.
