Washington quarter grading

I would appreciate some insight into why these 2 quarters wouldn’t receive the same numerical grade besides the obvious fact they were submitted to different TPGs

Well...primarily because they are 2 different coins.

The first one looks to have quite a bit more going on in the obverse fields than the 2nd one does as well as having what looks like a little rub on the cheek. The first has a pretty good hit above the 9 of the date, the 2nd has the die crack over the date. The 2nd looks to have a pretty good gash above George's eye.

Why do you expect that they should receive the same grade?

I agree with @ModCrewman , plus, in the pictures, the strike on the P coin is not as good as the D quarter (IMO).... Cheers, RickO

ModCrewman, I don’t know if the first comment was a joke or not but I did realize the first is a P and the 2nd is a D. I personally got the impression that they have about the same amount of chatter. I think the ding above the 9 is less detracting than the scratch above the brow; plus there is a contact mark in the field under the LI. I really was trying to determine if there was more going on than just the coin itself.

Ricko, what you both say may be true; I never feel like my pics reflect what I see but maybe I need to take it up with my optometrist.

In any event, I’m trying to get a feel for how PCGS is grading Washington quarters these days. I’ve been gone for awhile and when I was last actively submitting, let’s just say things “felt” a little less objective, so was hoping that using these 2 someone might point out peculiarities that apply to Washington’s.

    Thank you both.

In the second one, one can see more detail in the eagle's breast feathers (a very telling feature on this type).

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

There are more marks on the obverse of the Philly coin.

I like the strike and luster of the D.

So how far apart are they in grade? To your point, at least in my collecting area, the PCGS grading standards have seemed to be rather conservative at current.

i like the strike better on the 58 d. fwiw

Yes the “D” I admit is crisper. Tryin to come up with a comparable “P” but. I felt this could be it but the consensus seems otherwise.

    ModCrewMan,
Apologies. This board is a new look for me and I can’t even keep up with my own thread yet.

I’ve have the Philly for a while, holding place in my Birth year set, looking for the twin of the “D”. Numerically they have the same grade although the TPGs differ apparently. In my opinion they both are numerically the same but I add i primarily collect Morgans. I recognize that different series may have peculiarities. Essentially, my intent was to seek the expertise of you quarter folks in the forum. I do like a silver coin so I’ll be at it again.
