RARE MINT ERROR found hunting!

1916 - Die Adjustment Strike.

From what I've gathered, these are some of the rarest mint errors....especially on old coins. This is the third wheat cent die adjustment strike I could find online.... and is by far the oldest.

Going out to PCGS soon!

Thought you guys would like to see. :)

What makes you think it’s a die adjustment strike?

Not an error but still cool you found a 102 year old coin in circulation.

I seriously doubt PCGS will call that a die adjustment strike. It is a designation almost impossible to prove.

Even if the coin's state is believed to be a striking error -- and I don't think that's the case here, there are many other reasons a coin can have a weak strike (equipment malfunctions). Trial strikes are the least likely.

But please come back and tell us what PCGS said.

OP - Please explain how a "die adjustment strike" occurs. Members will probably appreciate your attribution and react with greater confidence if they are sure you understand the technology and causes behind your claim. :)

There is definitely an error here, BUT I'm not so sure it's the coin.

I got a hall pass from a teacher back in high school that he didn't put a time or date on.

I spent the rest of my high school time wandering the halls all day.

    I'm lucky I graduated. ;)

It could be a weakly struck wheatie. The problem is that it’s also very worn. Generally to be reasonably confident of a weak strike you’ll need a lusterous unc to show lack of detail in the absence of actual wear. This one will not be designated as an error by a tpg for that reason, I think.

I would think that a Die Adjustment Strike coin would still have a rim.
With this coin the rim is almost all worn away.

I think the rim on a trial strike is supposed to be weak or missing entirely.

Definitely not a die adjustment strike. Very well worn mixed in with some post mint damage. Feel free to disagree.

@cherrypickerrrrr I think you should save your $60 plus shipping to PCGS and back. It is not an error like many before me have mentioned. It is really just a seriously worn Lincoln cent that will probably grade Fair-2. I think you should weigh the sucker before you send it in, my bet is that it is under weight from what a copper Lincoln cent is supposed to be. If it was a die adjustment strike it would be 3.11 grams, which is the correct weight.

You should weigh it (as previously recommended) AND measure the diameter. I think it was pressed/flattened at one time after it left the mint. Notice the distance from the IGWT to the edge and compare that to a standard early cent. I think the other devices are spaced too far away from the rim as well. Anything larger than 19mm, would indicate PMD. These would be quick and easy checks to do before claiming you have a rare error, or spend money to have it authenticated.
